Can Someone Help Me With AdSense Channels?

I just started using AdSense a couple of weeks ago and I think I am using the channels wrong.

I thought when I created an Ad that when choosing the channels for that add was like choosing keywords. I just read something that tells me I might be wrong about that.

Are channels just there to name your ad placement?
Are they just for my benefit and not in anyway like a keyword to determine what Ads are displayed?

If that's the case why do they allow up to 5 channels in one Ad placement?
I have a site on social networking where I named some channels in one ad placement, MySpace and Facebook.

You may see I am pretty confused.

Can anyone explain this to me in layman's terms?
    Thanks
    Len

As far as I understand it, adsense channels are just there to help you with tracking your ads - they don't affect the ad in any way, so nothing to worry about. They just appear in the adsense reports. I have each ad type I create as a seperate channel
