I am new to the subject of seo, and I would appreciate advice on a few seo questions: 1) For anchor text on incoming links to my site, are 2-3 linked keywords in one anchor phrase optimal, and is 4-5 keywords in one anchor text too many words? What is the preferred amount of keywords as anchor text in one incoming hypertexted link? 2) Does the above principal apply to my internal links throughout my site? 3) Will I get penalized for having 4-5 keywords in one anchor, and/or will this amount of keywords devalue the incoming link to my site? 4) I know I should get incoming links from high pr sites, but when I go to directories that have high value pr on their main homepage, then once I find the subcategory for my site, the subpage that is appropriate for my site does not always have the same high pr as their homepage. For example, the homepage on a valued directory might have a pr of 6, but my sub category page might have a pr of 0 or 1. Will I still get the high pr value of the directory's homepage to my site even though my incoming link page on that site is low on pr, or is it not worth paying for the link and only get links from the minimal amount of directory sites that have decent pr on the subcategory pages? 5) When getting links from directories, Should I use my more competitive keywords as anchor text in the higher pr directories, and save my lower competitive keywords for anchors in the directories with lower pr value? 6) What is your top 5-10 best directories for me to get links, paid or unpaid? excluding dmoz, I have tried, but it seems impossible to get listed on their site. Thank you
Use anchor text on internal and external links based on what you assume or researched that people will enter into a search engine to be able to find your site

Anchor text has a big influence on your SERPs- more than you think. Check out this article- it will really open your eyes: The Power Of Anchor Text
1) This is a very specific question that I doubt anyone here can answer, to know the answer you would have to test it on many different projects and see if there even is an "optimal amount". So go ahead and just try, see what happens. 2) Same as #1 3) No, I doubt you'll get penalised for having to many words in an anchor text. It's quite natural for people to link out using both long and short anchor texts. I would doubt Google could impose any blanket penalisations on sites that have long inbound anchor text links. So, don't worry about it, go ahead and use as many as required. 4) You will not get as much value passed to you as from the homepage. However I don't think it's worth paying for front page links, there are far more valuable links you can obtain without paying. Besides you shouldn't get hung up on PR, by far the anchor text is the most important thing you want control of. 5) An interesting thought. I actually think you should concentrate just on one keyword at a time so you can measure your results properly and don't spread out your efforts to thin. Occasionally change up your anchor text so that you don't trigger any spam flags, I had a deranking on Yahoo after an over use of one particular keyword in anchor text. 6) To be honest most directories are a pile of @£$ anyway, believe me, I know, I run a few myself. There are some that are higher PR than others, but don't get hung up on it, I've never acheived good rankings using just directories. For me, directories are only a starting point, they get me indexed and usually visible somewhere in the first 200 results.
