That depends on what the domain name is beeing used for. If it is for a specific website, targeted at a specific keyword I google the keyword, and check for similar domain names. A smarter thing to do would probably to check with overture/keyword tools, but I've managed without it so far.. Sometimes I just register domain names because they have brandable value, or because I want to develop the domain name in the futer. But basically, Google & InstantDomain.name is my friends when I do my domain name research. How do you research domain names?
For me it was easy. I wrote 3 e-books, all showing a list of ways to be successful in certain areas of life, so, I went with "The List." Think outside the box. And be sure to look at other extensions if the COM is taken, like, FM, NET, BIZ.... If you are having a hard time, think about inserting your name along with what you do. For example: JohnsCellPhones.com. Or, simply: JohnsSite.com. Thinking of a good domain name is easy.
This is pretty good article that details how How to Select a Company or Product Name - http://www.developer-resource.com/how-to-select-a-company-name.htm Here are some tips on selecting a domain name http://www.small-business-software.net/choose-a-domain.htm As for what I do - lots of research! ;-) HTH
I have a short list of domains that stuck out mentally to me. For example, I use "gator" after a few of my keywords as domain names. For example, http://www.phpgator.com, etc. I go through that list and use one of the many free online scripts that can check multiple domains at one time. keywordgator.com keywordhawk.com keywordsupply.com keyword.com key-word.com keywordonline.com keyworddepot.com and so on... Usually I pick from that.
for me , its pleasing 50% search engine and 50% human visitors... basically i pick up a good keyword and then add some "sauce" to it to please my human visitors too
I know this may sound simple, but I use an offline Dictionary Book, and just look for a Domain Name until it is available (when I do a Whois Search for it).
I go to a article database and look at the topics people are writing on. I pick a topic then go use the Google keyword tool and make a list of keywords that are high ranking and sound good to me. Then I go search to see if those domain names are available.
1. Do your long tail keword search using your favorite tool, i like market samurai. 2. Refine your keyword list using your favorite method...competition, searches OCI, etc 3. Select your top keywords (up to 500) 4. go to https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/registrar/bulk/bulk.asp and paste your keywords in the box (no need to remove spaces). 5. select your favorite TLDs... Com, Net, Org, etc 6. put in the CAPTCHA and click search - easy as pie
I use this domain generator. There is also a domain cruncher (follow the green tab) - it is fun to use
