    DP members,

I am thinking of creating a download site for my niche which is not on CB yet and the niche is actually quite big.

I would like to know how those 'unlimited downloads' sites work? I hear it has something to do with torrents?

    Thanks,
    Dim

Basically, they make a "flashy", nice looking home page, promising thousands of downloads, unlimited access and all that stuff.

Once you purchase the membership, they just explain you how to use torrents. That's it.

The key here is to have a very convincing and attractive home page. Check out some popular download products to get an idea how it should look like.

But isn't it illegal to directly link to pirated movies and games?

It is not illegal to tell someone how to use torrents. It is only illegal when someone uses bittorrent to infringe on copyrights. I would guess that they have a legal disclaimer of some sort informing the customer that it is not on them if they decide to download illegal content.

Ya so I guess its okay to allow them to search for the programs, but not
to actually link to it. I think thats how most of the download websites work.

If they provide only that information, how the iPod download sites used to have great conversions with less refunds. Ofcourse, they were banned due to issues with Apple.

Do they just link to a torrent site and tell people to search from there or
do they usually have there search function on their own website?

They usually just link to other torrent sites. Doing anything else is bordering on illegal, so it's not worth the risk. Most people don't know how to download from torrents, so the guide is good value. But, most people who buy also don't know that what they're doing may be illegal. It's all a bit of a grey area, but the download sites aren't doing anything wrong by telling people about torrents.
