The most initial part of keyword research is that the domain name of the site matters a lot. If you do not have a domain name that you can have your keywords on, then you must start searching all the keywords search density using keyword tool. I use seobook [dot] com. Then also check for the competition on google to see if you can really achieve the ranking by whatever plan of action that you might have readied for your task and then accordingly start with your task.

No the domain name is not the most important thing...that is rubbish. Quality backlinks and unique content is the most important. Keywords in your domain name help a bit, but quality backlinks counts for much more. You can rank for any keyword if you have good enough links, regardless what your domain name is.

To research keywords I like to make a spreadsheet of all my potential keywords. I make note of the Google search volume. If I have many keywords I sort them by category. Then depending on your seo skill level and ambition start examining keywords part way down your list. Search Google and the other search engines for each phrase. Check how many of the top rankings have that keyword in their page title, url or in page content. See if it is mostly homepages in the top 5 or if some internal pages manage rankings. You can check the backlinks of the top results to get a better idea of the competition level too. Also examine your full keyword list for any trends. You may find a group of similar keywords that can be targeted concurrently.

Well, it doesn't hurt if you have keywords in your domain. Sometimes that is not possible and if it is, you should not rely on that solely. I agree with vansterdam, unique content is so important...Google loves unique organic content. Backlinks are definitely extremely important as well.
