Read some threads in the DMOZ forum you''ll find a lot, some even have their editor profile link in their signature.
And now we know there are two ODP editors in this thread, can I throw another questions pls? How long does it take for you to edit/check sites that are being submitted? And are you being paid? What does it takes to be an dmoz editor? Thanks!!
1. It varies. 2. No. The Open Directory is run by volunteers, with only a tiny handful of paid staff. 3. A desire and ability to classify, a grasp of grammar and spelling, and some ability to work with others. Enjoyment of research is a bonus. It is often found in those who go on from a first small category to edit widely in the directory.
Time to edit? Months, years... Pay? about $50,000 a year, $100,000 for editall's and meta gets around $200,000 plus laptop, cellphone and bmw What does it take? Normal color vision Distant vision, uncorrected to 20/70, but corrected to 20/20 Near vision, uncorrected to 20/20 Meet refraction, accommodation and astigmatism requirements Corrective eye surgery could be a disqualifier Have no history of hay fever, asthma or allergies after age 12 Meet DMOZ weight and physical conditioning requirements Have standing height of 64 to 77 inches and sitting height of 34 to 40 inches Sorry, couldn't resist. But now seriously Time to edit? Zero to months... some categories almost never get submission so you must search yourself or they get wrong one, spam or weird looking sites which you can't make head or tail and you keep it in unreviewed for months hoping they will do redesign. Pay? nope, maybe if you become number one and AOL hires you What does it take? Fluency in language for which you apply for, good writing skills, willingness to spend hours searching the net for sites to add.
We review sites when we can, how often that is would be entirely up to each editor, depending on the amount of free time they have and their level of commitment. If you have some time to spare, maybe you'd like to join us?
IIRC you have to add at lest one site in three months or you get deactivate... happened to me once... so far
