Pay per Click is OK and i have seen people doing it very well but you need full research to understand what will give you good results.

I have never succeed with ppc campaign, so I use SEO with squidoo and my blog to promote the affiliate program

Since no one has bothered to mention it, the way to set up your PPC campaign is to find the long tail keywords that are related to the affiliate product you're pushing. They won't have as much traffic, but you'll be able to bid almost the minimum so you won't go broke, and the traffic will be targeted. Find the keywords for your product that people would enter when they're in "Buying" mode. If your product is fishing poles, you don't want to set up a PPC campaign targeting "fishing poles". Go with "cheap fishing poles" or "discounted fishing poles". Those are keyphrases people search for when they're ready to buy.

You don't have to go with PPC..but if you do it right, you will convert sales and not go broke in the process. It's all about return on investment.
