lol funny considering NIS 2009 detects more than Kaspersky, actually Kaspersky even failed the VB100% this year, Norton didn't. ;)

Norton is very heavy on the system..but it does detect a lot more infections than any other software out there..however, if you are looking out for a free antivirus..stop your search at AVG..

Why don't you get KASPERSKY AV? It is the best in terms of software protection.

i used to dislike Norton when it was too slow. I then used Eset Nod32. it was fine until it stopped working. Now i use Norton 2009 . Im like wtf. its very fast and low on resources. Definitely best antivirus right now.

This one is too heavy & eat too much system resources. I also would like to prefer Kaspersky Securities :)

I've had nothing but problems with Norton running on XP and Vista. Its a big hog and acts like a virus itself.
I've been running Avast now on both XP and Vista and absolutely love it! It updates every time I wake up the computers and I know I'm protected and its free for the home user.

i've done the rounds of using a number of the usual suspects when it comes to antivirus software. i wasn't a fan of norton/symantec at all a few years back but i have happily settled for a norton 360 license for my home PCs over the last couple of years. 80 bucks/year for 3 PCs - the gui is simple and backups etc work nicely. fwiw, i reckon it's improved hugely in the last two years.

Majority of the products of Norton are found to be very heavy on resources except may be Norton GoBack and so, I generally refrain from using them.

Even I belong to the Kaspersky camp !

Right, SAVCE is a great choice. Is less bloated than the official Norton with a very simple interface.

I use Norton Internet Security 2009 and find it super cool. Definitely worth the $50 I paid. Unlike NIS 2008, this latest version of NIS uses very little CPU resources.

I worked for Microsoft for a couple years doing (paid for & free) Windows support.

Every tech on the floor hated Norton*

At one point I estimated half my calls were related to their software. There was even days where more than half my calls were via Norton.

It was so bad, i was amazed Microsoft didn't just flat sue them. I openly suggested it many times.

The amount of free support Microsoft provided (when i worked there) as a result of Norton* products.. could only be wildly (yet accurately) speculated.

Let's just say it's a huge amount & Microsoft is WAY WAY too nice about it.

But i will give it to ol' Microsoft for taking the hit & higher ground.

Symantec has gotten better in recent years, but it's still not the best. I'd recommend Avast or Avira for the best antivirus. Combine that with a good anti-malware, firewall, system monitor, and some other stuff and you're good :)
