Domain Name - .Info vs. .Com - Does It Matter?

Discussion in 'General Marketing' started by activebiz, Jan 20, 2009.

Tonight as I sat on the computer I was thinking about a past site that I built with little effort and sold for a reasonable price in a very short amount of time. Now I have decided I am going to build from my past ideas and start a couple new and fresh sites that will have more content etc.

At the moment I am at the point of deciding the domain names. These domains are going to be keyword domains so that I will hopefully get indexed within Google faster and easier. Now I need to know which is better for getting indexed higher in search?

I have choices between a .info and a .com and I am not positive which one I should go towards. .Info's will allow me to build more sites for a cheaper price which could mean even more profit but .com's will make my site look more professional since I plan on selling products with affiliates such as Amazon and eBay.

Now whats your opinion on the matter? Please I would love to hear it :D

Well as far as i know (Im not a SEO expert) Search Engines really don't care about the extension, they look for links and unique content, but for people and customers the .com is important. ;)

I just do not see many .info's in Google. I don't know if it is me not looking carefully but I just don't.

.Com extensions are heavily weighted..so stick with .com if you can. .info is behind .net..and .org

Correct, if you're country has a domain name for example in Australia we have .com.au, so anything with that is weighted heavily in Google Australia but generally it goes

    - .com
    - .net
    - .org
    - .info
    - .biz
    - etc etc

I would generally stay with the gTLDs (generic top level domains .com, .net and .org) if you want something good, so think hard for a name!

    - A

I prefer .com as compared to .info as the latter seem to have the tendency of getting penalised for no reason at all.

dot com every time they are favoured for weighting and visitors are not familiar with dot info and wonder what the site is about.

It doesn't matter. If someone says it matter then all his statements are bullshit.

thats the stupidest question ever, .com will always dominate the internet, most regular users dont even know about the .info domain extension

not much affect the SERP result. However, .com is more standard, better choose .com if possible

its really matters , you just want visitors to know that your site is commercial not an information site just by buing a dot.info domain

The .com seems easier to rank with, but I'd register the com, net, org and info and create different websites on each and link back to the com (preferrably from the index page), especially if it's keyword related. If nothing else at least you'll cut down on competition.

Or if you're lazy just redirect the other domains to the com domain.

get the .com and let your competitors have the others . . . . people that are NOT webmasters REFER TO THE ENTIRE INTERNET AS .COM

so with that being said if you dont own the .com you are basically advertising for the .com BECAUSE even if the visitor finds you ONCE . . . they are going to the .com the 2nd 3rd and so on . . . at least thats just my out look on it :D

2nd, 3rd and so on??? On the surface tha may seem to make sense, I would agree, but if one was to think about it for a little bit, although not many here can think, if they go to a info, fm (like I have), or whatever the first time, and they go back to it again but this time put in com and they see they aren't at the right site, they won't go back to it. They will, naturally, go back to the site they were at the first time.

And if they like it enough to want to go back to it again, they will either write it down, or put it in their favorites, since not many can even remember the url.
