I tried articlemarketer.com a couple years ago. The service definitely works but its expensive. At the time it was 35 for 3 months. I think its gone up alot since.

I was once told that you could just email webmasters of sites with high PR that are related to yours and request a backlink or link exchange.

    Does that work?

You will be lucky to get One single link for every 100 requests... It's a very difficult and frustrating way to build links

    _________________________________

Very out dated method that DOES NOT work any more

See what Google has to say about Link exchanges Here:http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=66356

    _________________________________

Mass submission of the same article to article directories is a complete wast of time, and can get your site flagged for duplicate content... at best you will get credit for only 1 link

    _________________________________

Google used to recommend submitting to directories but they have recently removed the recommendation from theiw webmaster guidelines... the only directories that will do you any good are Dmoz, Google Directory and Yahoo Directory... But Good luck getting a listing (very Difficult)

Just quit using google search then you'll be fine. You don't have to use their service and you don't have to stick to their rules. They're not God and they're not the only search engine out there.

No offense but you would be foolish not optimize for google. Many people don't like it, but they are the biggest and best. However you have a point, people often forget to optimize for the other major players.
