Is a firewall used to keep viruses off your computer?

I always thought that a firewall was used to prevent viruses from coming on your computer as well as to keep hackers from stealing your information. I was going to download this FREE Comodo Firewall and it's saying that it's just used to keep hackers from stealing your info. I'm a little confused here.

    Free firewall = No firewall
If you want to get some security - OutPost, BitDefender, etc ..

A firewall is an integrated collection of security measures designed to prevent unauthorized electronic access to a networked computer system. It is also a device or set of devices configured to permit, deny, encrypt, decrypt, or proxy all computer traffic between different security domains based upon a set of rules and other criteria.

Yeah I am not an expert by any means...but I would not trust a free firewall to do its job properly...you just can't be too careful with some things:)

I used free AVG anti-virus software and their software seems to work pretty well. All because the software is free doesn't mean it isn't quality.

AVG is good. But Kaspersky is even better, not free though.
And yes, Firewall whould block keyloggers/trojans to provent sending logs/access for hacker. To detect them better you need AV.

My point of view, as your computer connected to the internet there are many possible users who wants to access your unit stealing/hacking your computer's information. FireWall eliminates that. But for the Viruses around the net, it is controlled by an Anti-Virus Software.

A firewall doesn't stop a virus, if you want to be protected from viruses I suggest you use NOD32.
Yes it costs but you get what you pay for, it's kept me virus free for years now! it does a great job!

Zonealarm Pro firewall is excellent and it does its job really well....Firewalls are used to grant you an option to control which programs on your pc connects to the internet.
It is safe if you know what you are doing!

To be honest I don't trust Windows at all on the internet, regardless of how many security programs I run, so I stick with Linux. However to answer your question as I see it, a good firewall keeps hackers out and also helps you control what programs have access to the internet. The best firewall you can have is a good router.

    I dont agree man.

Basic window firewall is enough if you want to keep yourself safe, and free panda antivirus or AVG free does good job..

if you are paranoid about security move to Ubuntu...

Yep, windows basic firewall will do, but it doesn't virus from infecting your PC, have a good anti virus. I'm using NOD32 now, as i have noticed NOD32 is a good detector.:)

I actually installed the firewall I mentioned above and immediately uninstalled it after my computer started freezing up. I'd rather leave my computer open to hackers rather than have my system crash on me.
