I make my own. Several years ago when Alexa started charging for their service, I saw that as a wake-up call. Relying on someone else to provide images for my site was a risky proposition.

Granted with two niche directories, I have less submissions than owners of general directories. But, I feel the extra time is well spent in knowing that I am not at the mercy of whether or not another site is 1. up and working, 2. remains free and 3. continues to provide thumbnails.

I always try to stay away from the services used by the majority to avoid such problems.

Yeah, most services like this go down and start having problems once they become popular. That is because they run these services more like a hobby and less like a true business.

You've got to search out the few who invest in their infrastructure and plan for growth in order to avoid those kinds of growing pains. Some growing pains are to be expected but downtime is unacceptable. I've seen similar services go offline for days, weeks, and even months (in one case) at a time. It's amazing they have any users left.

As another member mentioned, you may want to try out http://www.shrinktheweb.com and see how flexible and full-featured it is. Enjoying a 100% uptime for over a year since the beginning -even through a tornado that destroyed our secondary data center. Users didn't even know. ;)

I use shrinktheweb as well and haven't had any issues.

    You could also try:
    websnapr.com
    thumbnailspro.com
    thumbalizr.com
    webshotspro.com
