Is there a way to see what competition is doing for SEO?

I want to "spy" on my competition, is there any way in which this can be done? I was #2 on Googles 1st page for 2 months, now slipped to #5, so I need to check what they are doing...

I have not used this, but SEO SpyGlass seems to be what you are looking for.

You can probably do a few quick visual searches to check out their page title, meta description and meta keywords etc. To do a more in depth analysis of keyphrase usage, keyphrase density and backlinks use some of the many software tools that are available, these should help to give an insight as to what they are doing.

Once you have all this info, see how it compares to your own site and see if you can fine tune anything.

You cannot be sure, all you can do is making guess ... maybe they are using the same techniques as you but more effectively ... maybe they are spending more at SEO & SEM ... you should better be trying to improve rather than spying on their techniques because that's not going to help at all.

Here is a tool that is very useful for checking backlinks, it will provide the site, page rank, "follow tag" and the anchor text of the link (even more, I think, but this is the most useful info) for all the backlinks yahoo lists for any given site.

    http://seopro.com.au/free-seo-tools/link-checker/

Granted, backlinks are just a part of their strategy, but if your comeptition surpassed you in SERPs quickly, linking probably helped them out a lot. Good luck!

there's really 2 things to concern yourself with: onpage seo, and offpage seo.

for onpage, just pull up their site & use your eyeballs :)

for offpage, check out their backlinks - you can use yahoo site explorer for this, but if they have a lot of links it could be tough too discover if they've landed some really high pr links.

It's a fairly basic way, but check their source code (Menu item View / Source). Also check out keyword density using one of the free seo tools in google and http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/ compare your backlinks and their's.

As people have stated, the biggest area you should be concerned with is your competitors backlinks. There are various tools to view your competitors backlinks, including just using the link:www.domain.com command in Google or Yahoo. Personally I use software called SEO Elite. It checks a website's backlinks through various search engines. Then it neatly compiles it into one report with extra info such as pr, alexa rank, etc.

You can analyze your competitors using seo tools that can be found on the web! Study where they get their links and how do they get it. SEO Pro provides links with their anchor text of site. :)

Maybe try looking at your own site's backlink profile to see if anything looks like it's changed or gone awry.
