Will you lose your rankings if you quit building backlinks?

Most of my link building usually happens when I first startup a website. If I don't build backlinks on a regular basis will I eventually lose my rankings?

if you don't build backlinks it will not effect your search engine rankings as long as you have visitors coming to your website but you will definitely either lose PageRank or it will not increase when PR update takes place

its al about competition. while you get ranked and enjoy the ranking and traffic, your competitors are not sitting there watching TV, they are building links to catch up with you and to beat you. so if you want to maintain your ranking and even get better placement for other longtail terms, you will have to do occational link building. if you stop, you will see your ranking drop after one or 2 updates. however, you dont have to do that extensive link building once you are ranked. all you need is occational link building to make it look natural.

The Link building can stay at a maintenance level - Just a link here and there to help keep your ranking.

Unless you start moving back quickly....

Not if you have good content. People will keep linking to your site and you don't have to lift a finger

Yup, good content will generate natural links for your site without doing anything. But if you have strong high ranking, regular link building for a particular keyword is not anymore required.

Without backlinks, no rank. If your website is 3-4 years old then you will get some advantages of aging specially in google. If your website is new then continous link building is important and the link should be relevant to your website.

Link building is extremely important. But if you strive hard to provide good content, people naturally link to you, so it continues on. Just keep updating and adding stuff. Links are super important to SEO.

Also, the more traffic you have, the more people will have a google or alexa toolbar, and that really helps rankings too. Sites that get lots of traffic will always bring in better SEO results as well.

Keep updating and adding cool stuff to your page!

(I say this as I am currently adding an article every two months, perhaps I should take my own advice!)

Good content combined with a solid reputation and huge fan base will generate a "significant" amount of natural backlinks. Even if your content is good, if you don't have the other two you may not get that many natural backlinks.

I've been advising clients against building links with one specific term. The reasoning for this is, the algorithms are starting to pick it up. If you build links with the exact same anchor text in a short time, it looks like optimization and gets flagged. Its best to have a good variety of links going.

i think u should focus on ur quality content rather than link building, because i think google will soon develop something about it very soon, i got a feeling.. because this SEO is not fair to non-SEO people.. and we have seen many examples..

my main focus is content.. if other people like my site, they will link my site anyway.. because now, i don't even see links from DP forums anymore in google link:mysite thing since new year.

if your site is made of quality content, and a few high quality backlinks then you should not lose your rankings by not continuing building links. however think of it this way, two sites with the same content & links, one keeps link building, and the other doesn't. the one that keeps link building is most likely going to rank higher!

    hope it helps :)

Yes this effects but I think after new update . If you have stopped updating but competitors are working continuously than they can move over to your rankings and you will lose them .

Not, if you are using a good informative and keyword rich content. It should be relevant to tha web page theme and should have right keyword density and proximity.

If there is no competition in your keyword then you don't have to, but if you think that your keyword is in high demand then you will lose rank eventually.

Link building has nothing to do with your website's ranking. You get ranked due to the onpage optimization i.e. your keywords. Link building helps you obtain a higher PR, which is simply a Google's way to show the importance of the webpage. Webpages with higher PR don't necessarily rank better than those with lower PR. Be sure to use your keywords in anchor text.
