I'm a newbie in this profession, and some experienced colleagues tell me this is a good way to build links. But they don't exactly tell me how to do this. Can anyone help? Much appreciated. PS: I've tried browsing the forums for any related post, and I think there isn't one, or at least I haven't found one. So pardon me if this is a topic repost.
create a profile on as many social bookmarking sites and if they offer a free blog then create one or use one and create links to your website, this does take time though good luck

Some social networking sites provide do follow links. You can use your targeted keyword as your anchor text in different social networking sites like linkedin.
If you want to build backlinks through social bookmarking/networking sites, better to focus more on those sites that provide dofollow links.
Also good to bookmark other sites other than your own, looks more natural and less spammy. Or if you have blogger/wordpress blogs, ect.
you can get backlinks from social sites like squidoo, hubpages, etc by setting up an account and publishing an article with link to your site. there are also lot of social bookmarking sites where you can setup accounts and bookmark your sites. there are some dofollow Sb sites where you can get backlinks form. but some popular nofollow SB sites get offer some benefit as well in terms of traffic. you can read my blogpost on social bookmarking for more info
Due to spam, many popular social bookmarking websites are now nofollow. But still some are dofollow. The social bookmarking is the best source of traffic. So it will help you little in ranking and traffic.
You should know first about what's your target age range because there are social networking sites that targets different kinds of ages. Also check if they offer profiles that has do follow.. You can add many friends and post a comment including your link as your signature..

submit your links in your own profile in all the networking websites also tell you friends to submit your website URL in their profiles........ then start posting your links in forums in the communities of these networking websites where people often visits and discuss
from my experience, social bookmarking does help in SEO, but sharing of your links in social media like twitter or facebook doesn't help. The only way it MAY help is if people click on it, like it, and link to it from their blog/website. Other than that, people who say social media marketing helps in SEO is TALKING CRAP. It only helps in getting traffic, NOT SEO
