No, it is not necessary unless you want to.

If you want your own SSL Certificate you should get you own IP.

Getting your own IP should only cost an extra $2 a month if you're on a shared server.

You could basically get a dedicated IP for SSL protection. Don't use PrivateSSL's, they are all crap and simply "not worth it".

As was said...if you want a SSL...you probably want a dedicated IP...but you could get by using a site like "e-junkie" to add ecommerce without having to have a SSL

Can you elaborate? Also, is the $15 Godaddy SSL cert sufficient for e-commerce?

    Yes it sufficient.
But from client point of view, they more trusted Verisign than GD,so its a good idea to buy from Verisign coz they are the SSL industry leader.

I, from a consumer's, or site visitor's perspective, do not care about the cert issuer. I look for the https to ensure my personal information is encrypted and that the site is who they said they are. Maybe others are more cautious and particular about the SSL issuer, but I don't think it's a big deal. The cost savings between a GoDaddy and a Verisign cert is astronomical.

Not only if you are using a SSL Certificate
Many desire a dedicated IP to differentiate themselves to the search engines as being on a dedi IP
