I read of people suggesting to use misspelled keywords but what im unsure of is does that use go beyond the keyword list in an adgroup? Theres the regular suggestion of relevancy between the ad text and landing page etc, im guessing its not recommended to start adding misspellings to the copy on your landing page? So does this use of misspelled keywords apply to the list of keywords you put together only?
I bid on lots of misspellings (and believe me there are a lot of ways that people misspell jewelry/jewellery). I do not take it any further than that, i.e. I do not deliberately use them in my ads or on my site. I have read many comments that there is little advantage in bidding on misspellings since Google allow for them in the search results. However, what I find interesting is the variation in QS and 1st page estimates that G assign to the various misspellings. There does not appear to be any rhyme or reason behind it but, essentially, the majority, although not all, of the misspellings have higher QS, higher average position and lower CPC than the correct spellings. Others can have lower QS, etc. For the example jewelry/ jewellery, both the correct spellings have a QS of 7 and the misspellings can vary from 9 down to 6. Given the same bids the misspellings will usually appear on page 1 while the correct spellings average c. position 12 for one spelling and about position 20 for the other. So, in conclusion, it is well worth bidding on the misspellings since they are definitely a source of cheaper clicks. There does not appear to be any need to "optimize" your ads or landing page to the misspellings for QS purposes.
Hi bjewelled, thanks for a very helpful explanation, its interesting the QS and estimates difference seen for some of the misspelled keywords. And glad i dont have to find ways to insert misspellings into a landing page, it would just seem so against common sense and look like a poorly written page but i thought worth asking, just incase.
If you are bidding on misspelled words then those mis words should be on your landing page somewhere. It doesn't have to be blatent but you'll want to improve your page quality. You'll have to write a super compelling ad copy so the user doesn't get a chance to realize that they actually misspelled the word. It can be profitable because the competition and cpc should be low. You would do a lot better if you analyzed (spy) on what your competition is doing.
You cant bid on every possible mispelling of every kw in your list. Just pick the kw with the highest volume, possibly a single word kw, and generate mispelling for that. There are many software around for that. Also create a new ad group for mispelling, do not just add those words to the ad with the correct version of the kw or it'll get very messy.
Sorry, but I could not disagree more! There is nothing worse, IMHO, than having poor language on your site - it just makes you appear totally unprofessional and, if you are in retail, is an immediate 'turn-off' to potential customers. I suppose you could create "hidden" landing pages for each misspelling but my experience suggests it is not really necessary and, depending on the number of potential misspellings, could be a huge amount of work for little gain. Then, once again, anyone arriving at the page because of a typo rather than a spelling mistake will probably think you insane and unworthy of their business.
