Directories Question

I want to list my sites in directories, but I have a few questions.

Most directories are not just about 1 topic. To my understand backlinks on irrelevent sites can penelize your rank, correct? For example; I want to list my exotic car site in a directory. Should I go off and just put it up on any directory? Or, should I go looking for automotive directories? Also, most directories want backlinks... With all the reading on SEO I have done this is not particularly good. "A directory should link to websites. Websites should not link to directories." As stated by SEObook. Whats your stand on that?

Another thing, lots of directories I see look like portal sites. Flooded with ads, and shotty graphics. Signing up requires lots of personal info *telephone, address etc... I am a bit wary giving out any info to sites like these. What are some things to look at in directories besdies PR?

Can someone please give some feedback.

    Thanks

    Your should:
    (1) Go and find out niche directories and then submit site
    (2) Go and find out FREE (non reciprocal, non paid) general directory with good PR and submit the site in proper category
    (3) The information directory need are sometimes optional, do not fill in that case, if mendatory, you have to provide the info. This does not harm as far as I know.

Other thing to look at in directories are- (1) Relevancy (2) seo friendlyness (3) PageRank.

Search with "'your top industry' + directory of directories" in google, yahoo and msn

Also, look into directories for niche directory listing.

man, unless you go doing some link farming, and have tons of bad links point to your site, backlinks to your site won't penalize your site. You cannot control that so you won't be penalised.
And, the more gool links you have the better, so my advice is to submit to every directory you can find, even if it has no pr...it will have in the near future, and will give you a good quality link.
    so, happy linking ;)

I agree, post everywhere. But I am wary of any site that asks for personal info like telephone numbers, addresses, age, sex, etc.

Why would they need this data. I don't know, so I don't give it to them.

Then really you shouldn't be submitting to those sites that require such's information I don't think it is necessary to have all that info's unless you are submitting it to a Classified Ads.

I require registration(short form) for my site, thats because they can come and edit their listings.

Try to imagine you are a user looking for information. Is the directory well-categorised, or are there hundreds of links bunched together in one section? Ideally you want to see 10 to 20 links for each subcategory. That way the link is valuable because the PR isn't spread too thinly, and it also means that someone browsing the directory would be able to find your site easily if they were looking for sites in a certain topic.
