Don’t spread your content over several domains. Don’t waste your time submitting your URL to search engines. Don’t make your web site uncrawlable. Don’t target overly general keywords. Don’t stuff keywords in your meta tags, image alt tags, etc Don’t stuff keywords in your page footer with lightly-colored or hidden text. Don’t have the same title element on every page. Don’t allow both www.yourdomain.com and domain.com to resolve to your home page Don’t ignore usability Don’t give up on creating great content because you think your customers don’t need or want it, or because your product or service doesn’t lend itself to great content. Don’t develop an unbalanced link profile Don’t request the same exact anchor text on all links to your site. Don’t plaster your link all over blog comments, guestbooks, etc. Don’t fret over keyword density.

Hello my friend, In my opinion, you must avoid Black Hat techniques, because I want to alert you about this. Keyword Stuffing: Stuffing keywords is a bit like spamming a search engine. To keyword stuff is to take a targeted term phrase, let’s use “make money†as an example, and repeat it excessively throughout your page in an attempt to maximize your search engine ranking positions (SERP). You can have the targeted term reflected in your page, meta tags, alt, titles, links and more. Doorway or Gateway Pages: Some webmasters have been able to manufacture so-called “doorway†or “gateway†pages that are little more than invisible pages that are only seen by search engine spiders and are used to increase SEO ranks. By heavily optimizing a website page for a search engine, it is very possible to artificially boost your SERPs while redirecting real visitors safely to your website before they know any better. Cookie Stuffing: The practice of cookie stuffing is one of the more easily mastered black hat SEO techniques on the web that involves secretly embedding a cookie into a visitor’s web browser without them ever knowing about it or even having to click a link. Invisible Text: Not as advanced as stuffing keywords, using invisible text is one of the more simple techniques thought of as black hat. Essentially, “invisible†text refers to writing up lists of keywords on particular websites in the color white, or the background color, so that they cannot be seen on the page (without highlighting, of course). By using invisible text, it is possible to feed through lots of rich content to search engines and users. However, this technique is becoming more easily detected every day. So my friend, avoid the black hat techniques while you create web site. Best of luck.
And in response to that last post, I say... Make sure it is a "reputable" SEO company. Don't go with something in India just because it's the cheapest out there. Many have also made that mistake.
wow we started out with a question about what you should not do and the answer is it is really up to you and depends if this is your own site or a clients site ...Time is $ so for clients befor you "go live"(2-3weeks out) take away the robots.txt disallow... has any one ever seen googles robots.txt (wow) aka http://www.google.com.au/robots.txt
Spamming the Keywords Some people create web pages just repeating the keywords hundreds of times or blending the font text color with the background color (hidden text)..but, this won't help you increase your search engine rankings. Also, remember that you are making the content for your visitors, not just for the search engines. Don't repeat the keyword too many times in the article...it doesn't sound right when you read it back.
