Lets say you wanted to rank highly for a particular keyword. Is it a good idea to google that keyword and try get a link on the sites listed on the first page or 2. Because all those high ranked and related sites are linking to you, will that give you a great ranking?

It would be a good idea, but more than likely they wont link to you. They are your competitors. Try to find high page rank blogs to post on.

It is like a suicide for your competitors. :) I'm sure that they will never link back to you. Anyway, that idea is good one. I suggest you just study where your competitors get their links, and you also build links on those sites.

Ok, guys I respect all your opinions however page rank is retarded...

    Let me explain...

I have a page on 1 of my sites that has held the #1 position in google for over 2 years now for it's keywords. That page brings in over 2000 visits a day according to google analytics. Which is not bad and I make some AD money because of it.

    Ready for the kicker?

It has a page rank 0.....

Now it has had a PR 2 in the past but because I don't bother getting links to it. It has fallen to a PR 0 yet I still hold the #1 position as I check it almost daily. The sites that I'm ahead of are PR 4 and 5. I bet those webmasters are pissed that they cant take me down.

What I have concluded is this.

Page rank only counts when you want to sell a domain. Because for some STUPID reason webmasters think just because a site has high PR they can ask more for it. Just look in the buy/sell domain section of DP if you don't believe me. I would NEVER buy a domain with any PR!!!!

The 2 most important factors IMO is #1 keywords.. #2 age of the domain.
As far as keywords, what ever is recommended by SEO's etc., double that....

But don't try to use to many variations of a given keyword on one page. Use 3 at most. You put to many and G's bot will not know what your shooting for....

I'll probably catch heat for this but I have the page, stats, 0 Pagerank and #1 position to back up my claims!!!!

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks
    John

PS: Most blogs use nofollow tags so the links don't count like they use to....

Nowaday google is updating their ranking algorithm and they announced that they will give PR to those sites/pages which they believe as it would be. I believe on unique contents and regular update. Backlinks are also most important if we get able to place on those sites which Google believe more than others.

If you can get them to link back to you, it would be the best thing you can achieve!

Yes it will help if the links are "Dofollow" and in your signature you can add some related content surrounding the link (Anchor) text = More value ;)

Use of keywords like 'click here', 'get it here', 'get it now', 'download now' , 'just' will rank your site higher.

Its going well, ive posted on the specific topics that have been outranking my site and on the sites in general. Ive used some good anchor text aswell. So hopefully i should fly up the rankings! Ive got a link on all of the search results in google for page 1 except for 2 or 3 of them.

Any good ways to combat youtube videos outranking my site? I was thinking of making my own. And using the keyword in the title and once or twice in the description and then included a link to my site. Any ideas on getting a youtube video to rank higher then others for the same keyword? Does it rely on good backlinks aswell? or does google just use the most relevant/best ranked video from youtube?

Yes, it will helps of course, but do you think they will link to you since you are their competition? You may get a link from them if you are trying to buy link from them.

It is surely a good way, and I have some success with this kind of method too in which I bought links on sites in the same niche but with higher PR.

But I am not sure if every site ranking number 1 on google pages will allow exchange. However, you can try with the number 2-10 sites too because I have experienced that those sites keep on changing positions on the 1st page as every webmaster tries to put their site on 1st place on page 1.

First question first, how do you want to get the sites listed on first and second page to voluntarily link to you. It's not a simple as exchanging links because they are authority sites.

Alot of you replying seem to miss this:
Most of the links beating my site are forum/blog posts they all have dofollow attribute (either by comment or signature) so it is VERY easy to get link on thier site.

so theres no need for people to keep saying its hard for me to get my links there, its just to easy.

Create content that's worthy of organic links, then you won't have to bother doing so much boring link building.

Getting your competition to link to you is a great way to improve your rankings in
the serps but in most cases that sites that appear on the 1st page of google will
not be willing to do this.
