I use CoffeeCup 2008 and Love it!!! Been using various versions for years.

Also Notepad, Notepad++, Dreamweaver (occasionally), Paintshop Pro and Photoshop.

No matter how you look at it, learning CSS is a bit of a must if you want to handle your own design work. But CoffeeCup has great CSS auto-complete features.

I use Joomla as the content management system - no HTML required.... and photoshop, to customize and enhance the site.

If you dont know HTML you should just find a hosting that gives you free JOOMLA. (Joomla is free btw, but if you dont know html you probably dont know anything about perl or script installation, so find a host that has autoinstall and can give you free joomla portal)

I think for any serious designs you'd need Dreamweaver and Photoshop.

A combination of Photoshop and Dreamweaver produces the best looking websites if you know what you're doing

Well being a fairly decent Graphical Designer & Styler(CSS) I just used HTML, Photoshop CS3 Extended and CSS.

Have to agree with Ripped, the serious designer has to be using Deamweaver, but I also like using Joomla. I have seen some pretty awesome stuff done with different applications, I guess it comes down to what is easy and comfortable for you to use. Wordpress has really come along ways for the guy who knows very little HTML, easy to use and its FREE. You can also find some cool wordpress template out there you can download for FREE also. FREE is GOOD!

I only use Notepad++ and Photoshop to design. I want to learn Dreamweaver though. I think it is up to you and your skill level to detemine what is easy to use. I am currently in college taking web design and all we use at the moment is Notepad++. No Dreamweaver or any other software at all. Still have a ways to go. I think Dreamweaver would make my life easier but I also feel that just using Notepad++ will help me in the long run. There is no right or wrong answer imo.

Won't hurt to learn XHTML, CSS and Photoshop though. They all will help you become a better designer!

I can guarantee I am making a lot more money doing this job than you are and I have never used Dreamweaver or any simiilar product to develop web sites.
How can you compare Dreamweaver with Joomla?

    I use mostly Photoshop, Notepad++ and http://validator.w3.org/ :)

I'm not a big fan of Dreamweaver, coding by hand is much better.

software doesn't make websites, people make websites.

Web design isn't software-specific - any program from which you can output text can be used.

Coffeecup has been around for a long time, I've never heard too much bad about the software QUALITY-wise, but I disagree with the thought that coffeeciup or dreamweaver are ever REQUIRED to make a website - and it seems that in the attempt to deign websites in the most simple and easy way, people go to great lengths to learn programs to 'easily and visually through drag and drop'. All of these programs work differently, inherently write poor code just because of the nature of the programs, and teach you nothing about web design (which means you don't know web design, you know a program and if you ever sat down without it you couldn't actually make a website).

Please, jEdit, Eclipse, Aptana Studio, Notepad++, Kwrite, Kdevelop, Textmate. Get yourself a good text editor. That's what the internet is: text. The sooner you understand that and learn how to write it, the sooner you'll be a web designer.

Honestly, the web is easy enough for a 13 year old to master, it's not that hard. The reason web-designers don't use these tools is because the easiest way to make a website is by typing out the code. All other ways are unintuitive and simply a waste of time, money, and skills.

I tend to use Dreamweaver mostly, but the majority of the time I code without an IDE, just a text editor. However, Dreamweaver is a nice application for producing relatively quick sites and nicely proportioned designs.

definetly have to agree with you on this point, I'm only use a basic html editor for my designs.

the worst thing you can do is start coding and using dreamweaver beacuse you will never learn how to really code
