When you answer some question try to ask for backlink as a favour for your help. You can also try traditional link building -- directory submissions, article marketing, forum posting, blogs comments etc.
if you are not charging anything and if its a truly helpful site, then you will get some natural backlinks. other than that, you can use the traditional link building methods

Why not write some useful articles and post them in ezine articles with backlinks to your site? Do your keyword research to insure some traffic. If you like tutoring you should check out www.liveperson.com. You could provide tutoring services over there and maybe earn a little money. I'm not sure about the rules but they might let you link to your site from your profile.
try the blog commenting way, its easy, fast and fun.. - Search using Google Blog Search mentioning your keywords - Look for Higher Page Ranked blog posts that return in the search - Post comments related to the blogpost and dont spam. I think its better create an account at forums related to science - for example goiit.com - and then staying active for a while there and putting link to your site in the signature space.

You can get free backlinks by commenting on blogs, there are many link exchange and link services available here on dp also.
Contact schools and colleges that you studied. They may help as you are an old student of that institution. Apart from that, you should be getting natural backlinks if people are really satisfied with your solutions. And another thing is, Just go to some questions and answers sites like yahoo answers and find questions related to your site. Answer those questions in that websites with a backlink to your site. Remember, Yahoo answers is NoDoFollow site. There are some other DoFollow sites that is just like yahoo answers. The list is here in my thread
