Hi I am a newbie in wordpress. I just started using it.

    My permalinks used to be
site name com/archives/postnumber then I got an seo advicethat it is not good, so I changed it to site name.com/year/month/post title.

So now I googled my sites and saw that the older post was showing error.I installed Dean's Permalinks Migration but it doesn't seem to help.

Guys, please help me. I am still researching how to solve this but I know there are alot of DPers that can give me good advice and help.

    Thanks in advance.

Try resetting it back to what the original was. However, google will take its own time in re-indexing.

Its better to set ur permalinks as custom structure: (seo purpose and for adsense)

    /%category%/%postname%/

Place that code in .htaccess file which u get when u change permalinks.

In se if ur url old structure is : youdomain.com/year/post/ then itwill automatically redirects towards new one. yourdomain.com/category/postname/

But if its not working then it mean ur .htaccess file has error or u did not place the code there. (this code is for writing url)

Hope it will help u if not drop me ur url i will resolve the issue.

You can see .htaccess file in 'public_html' in your root directory.

If your databse is still small, use thesuggested permalink: /%category%/%postname%/
And then create a sitemap using google XML sitemap creator plugin and ping google with it

If ur blog installation is in root dir then try this one

    ftp.yourdomain.com/public_html

If its in blog dir then

    ftp.yourdomain.com/public_html/blog

Note: Also ensure that u r using cpanel and linux or unix hosting.

Now go to exact dir and find .htaccess.txt file if u can not find one there then create new in notepad (open blank notepad file) n save as htaccess.txt now paste that code which u get when u set permalink structure.

Upload to the server. rename as .htaccess and u r done. If it does not work then pm me ur url

Yes, you need to set your .htaccess permission to 666. By the way, I also encountered the same situation before & I used Dean's Permalink Migration plugin & it worked perfectly.

@ Betong- Thanks! I did try to use that too but it didn't work for me so I just uninstalled it.

Ok is there any danger in changing it to 666 ? I mean I read somewhere that if you change it , it might be easier to get hacked or is that only for 777?

UPDATE:It is now solved.Thank so much guys!
I used Scott Yang Permalink redirect plugin. I filled in the old permalink structure area and now it's okay.
