I am interested in doing SEO consultation work. I am starting out w/ a family friend who owns a website and I know enough to know his site is not optimized.

What is the first basic step into optimizing a site??

I would say content, internal linking on the site, and changing title and meta tags.

 

internal linking on the site ... meaning link exchanges with others in the same industry???

 

I'm no expert but I do know that my site started ranking well when I did these things:

- Have unique descriptive titles on every page
- Have lots of content pages (or product pages)
- Internal linking within the site (as in, linking to sub pages where the anchor text of the link is a keyword that I want to target)
- ALT values on image tags
- Getting external sites to link to my site using important keywords as the anchor text
- Having a domain name that is "old"

I would say the title tag is is the most important thing. Make sure you have your main keyword in the title tag. Also make sure you have your main keyword phrase on the page of the site you are optimizing for.

Then make sure to get links from other websites to your website and have the site link to you with the keyword phrase in the text that is linking to your site (rather than using the domain name or url to link to your website.

i would say

- do the proper keyword analysis
- according to that update your meta tags
- update the description of the page
- make the proper title for targeted keywords.

 

agree with everything but also make sure your menu is linking to your sub pages through anchor text links which are KWs you want to target too

I am not expert but my suggestion is first step in S.E.O do work in On Page Optimization like Meta tag Optimization, Keyword Analysis, Unique Content Optimization with nice keyword density and after work on Off Page Optimization.

 

No, sorry, I mean linking from one page to another within your site. For example, if you are a realtor and you have a "listings page" and another page that goes over demographics of the cities, make sure the listings page has a link to the other page.

 

make website w3c validated is basic step, there should be no html errors
