I've heard good things about aspseek; it's been around quite a while. the drawbacks that I'm familiar with are that IIRC it's basically unmaintained, and it won't work on a full scale large search engine. However, if you're looking to run a smaller scale search engine with a more limited index, then I believe aspseek is a great way to get started.

Thats not true, you just need to be able to program, and have a good idea. The two guys who started google didnt have billions and hire from msn/alltheweb/etc

I've actually always wanted to make a search engine. From scratch, but not just a clone of the others. I have too much on now, but maybe one day i'll get to have a go.

Google was/is made in python i think? which is free, so really, if your good at programming, and you run the app off your own pc (it wont be visible to anyone else, but you can get the spiders going), then it shouldnt cost anything.

The main thing would be to make it differnt somehow. -- a lot better.

Anyone who says, theres no way to beat google, think about the way the then unknown google beat yahoo to being the top search engine? It was just a simple thing.. it could search better, and it was very clean looking.

Like said by someone above, it will the way your search engine rates pages that will be most important. -- i think unique visitors to a site should rank higher then backlinks for example.

    Anyway, good luck man.

I didnt actually read your post, or anyone elses below mads, so if someone has already said what i've just put, or anything else sorry :)

We have developed a new searchengine called OPERIKATA, the 3rd generation after Altavista and Google.

I heard that some Euros have taken Aspseek and are improving it. Cross your fingers, as it is open source.

It can be done but it is a market that you will not be able to break into. You will be going against Google, MSN, Yahoo and many others.

So if you have money, you might as well look into something different. I have few ideas that will work for search engines. You will not have to go against these big players. PM me for details.
