Build an Anthill like we have ;-)

Another question in stead: how many directories do care about automatic submissions?
If you do it means you have a better directory then a lot of other owners.

I use a captcha. Many here don't like them. I always use them. They work best if you remove one, el, zero and oh (1, l , 0, o). Even better if you use just numbers where there is even less worry of lower and upper case letters.

My second line of defense on one of my directories is a custom field. Automatic submitters dump keyword lists in it which is always a dead giveaway.

Most general directories use phpLD which is not spam resistant by default.

You'll need to modify a public open source script usually to protect against such crap.

digixmas and resellergo are well known fast semi automatic directory tool.
If you check their list, most of them are using phpld script.

If you are using phpld, I think it's better to make a small change with phpld script to make it unique for your directory. Change the phpld captcha to something like recaptcha or simple mathematics question.

    Can't answer all 3.

If I get hit with a bunch of subnissions from the same Ip all at the same time they all get deleted without even being looked at. If it happens twice from the same ip the ip gets banned.

There is no way a human could enter all the information at 1 minute intervals.

I took a back door approach and I let people submit all types of crap. Then I wrote an SQL script that deletes anything that doesn't meet my submission or quality requirements. I run it against my database before I do any reviews.

Unfortunately I do not use phpld, and at the moment I have no any directory website of mine that I could show you (I dropped my directory website because I did it in wrong way, I could say it's a very poor quality).

With a good script. Captcha is only part of the story, possibly not even the most effective part.

There are various solutions suggested by the members. I think an easy way would be the image verification.
