The reason is because PR 0 sites are given very very very little weight if any in the search engine.

Not true, the pagerank you see on your browser is not necessarily the pagerank that Google has for that site.

Also, pagerank is probably one tiny factor in a huge catalogue of metrics that Google uses to give importance to links.

I will take relevancy over irrelevancy any day. 1000 relevant PR0 links. is the way to go.

Remember, Todays PR0 will be tomorrow's PR2 (unless you are spamming guestbooks)

like he said PR these days is not to be taken seriously, the little green bar has been flawed for quite a few years but people still put too much emphasis on it being correct, use it as a guide and thats fine but don't get hung up on it being true for every site because its not

Related content is a main factor of effective backlinks.

relevancy has higher effect on serp. As for page rank weight, I think out of those 1000 page rank 0, a lot of those could actually be higher page rank by next update. Plus each page rank I think have about what? 3 to 5 times as much effect? So 1 page rank 2 = 10 page rank 0 in weight, throw in the relevancy factor, and potential of page rank 0 going up higher, I'd choose the 1000 link revalent pr 0.

The real issue here is do you want links or page rank. I would select the 100 PR2 links to get the page rank juice. It is easy to get a relevant PR0 link but very hard to get ANY link that has any PR juice.

I'll take the related links any day. In fact, I'd take 100 PR 0 related links over 100 PR 2 non related links. I've noticed over the years that relevance means more and more. PR means less and less.

    Quite right.

My 8 years of SEO experience agrees with you.

However, PR is an indication of domain age and authority. A pr8 link from a related website is more valuable than 1000 backlinks. I have the results to prove it.

PR doesn't matters in traffic. but when it goes down, the traffic drecreases also for the time being. I've seen dramatic changes in my PR since that time, I don't rely on PR. it's a stereotype. my empty baby sites with no content instanlty gets PR3. and the 100+ pages content rich sites get PR2 over years.

    100 relevant pr links:

first of all, they're relevant, which is more important than PR

secondly, their PR will most likely increase anyway so best of both worlds...

I think 50 relevant PR0 links are better than links from 100 irrelevant PR2 sites
