Dear experts. i need some more suggestions about back linking . as i am newbie in SEO world. recently i have asked one directory owner to give me link in hes site . he put do follow (directlink) to my domain . hes site has PR-5 . in exchange i have put hes link in my site . however later on my friend who does SEO job . he suggest me to add rel="nofollow" tag next to hes link . he think that will make my site better and it will be counted as one way link . i am little bit confused ? since then google has crawled my site 3 times but google hasnt count my link in directory site as a backlink. please suggest should i make hes link do follow . or nofollow option is better ? Regards Joy
i meant he put my link in hes site which is dofollow link however i put hes link my site which is nofollow question is will it effect my PR ?
Hi Joy, Some people say that Nofollow attribute help your website not t o distribute your popularity to other web pages. It is however fake explanation. The reason people to say that is because Search engines made changes that make commercial link exchange not to work because many site owners try to cheat. Just do what you want to do, don;t participate to link exchange and schemes and produce quality content.
good question since you want to put "Nofollow" on your site, why don't you tell him to put "Nofollow" on his site too. BTW : sometimes what you see is very different as google bots read many SEO experts play links with many ways .
If he's put a dofollow link on his site in exchange for a link from yours, then he will expect a dofollow link. If you nofollow it, I would expect him to remove your dofollow link.
I'd agree with what magda has said. In the grand scheme of things I would leave it as a normal link. All this nofollow stuff is really used when you have huge numbers of links on your page, and you want to preserve google juice within the page. Also it's used when you don't want to vouch for the other site's content. On individual one-off links I really would leave it as it is.
i agree with fcolor Google sometimes doesnt care about rel="nofollow" tag it considers the link still as a backlink & distributes the ranking, as per my experiments
Google does care about the nofollow tag, and does not distribute reputation or link juice through that link. It does follow it for indexing purposes but does not pass on 'ranking'.
let it be a healthy discussion sheppyc. may i know how are you telling that surely?? have you did any experiments on the same & confirm with any proff?
It's a healthy discussion, I was simply emphasizing that the opposite is true. Matt Cutts from Google has said that you should use nofollow links to untrusted sources. http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/quick-comment-on-nofollow/ Quoted from him: The nofollow attribute is just a mechanism that gives webmasters the ability to modify PageRank flow at link-level granularity. Plenty of other mechanisms would also work (e.g. a link through a page that is robot.txt'ed out), but nofollow on individual links is simpler for some folks to use. There's no stigma to using nofollow, even on your own internal links; for Google, nofollow'ed links are dropped out of our link graph; we don't even use such links for discovery. By the way, the nofollow meta tag does that same thing, but at a page level.
Google may not update the page rank, so wait it until google has PR Update . and you should added more backlink,
