When your laptop fan starts to get loud...what to do?

    2 months old, used about 12-18hrs a day and on 24/7 so obviously not taken care of well. Last week or so, the fan has started getting loud at random points during the day. What is the best thing I can do for the laptop at this moment? My last laptop only lasted 3 months - I think it's about time I trade in for a desktop computer, ugh.

    Cooler mat, a new fan, turn it off for a while, what?

    Give it a nice jiggle or slap, sometimes you need to put it back into its shape!

    If you are using a laptop for that many hours a day, I also think you should get a desktop computer :)

    Not to mention that I ruined it already, like the old one. After about two weeks the keys get worn out somehow and they get out of place and the cheap clip-ins snap...I don't know how I can write articles still with the spacebar button being about 1/2 a cm big...I do have a USB keyboard though.

    The fan is something that I would take serious though. I had a desktop (new) which lasted me about 4-5mths of use but after 2-3 the fan was way too loud to watch a movie with.

    Mine been doing the same thing for at two years. I just put in sleep mode when ever I go out and turn it off completely at night. Its still going.

    Can you explain what exactly the sleep mode does? I see it (and hibernation) but never bother with that stuff. Is it beneficial in comparison to just shutting down the computer?

    Laptop fan will get louder if you doing a heavy task as it need to cool down the internal part including the CPU. Try to change your setting to Power Saver mode as it will use less CPU power and less heat.

    If it still don't work, clean the air vent on your laptop in case it is full with dust.

    Laptop cooler does work as it make the laptop much cooler, so your laptop will working on normal mode and no need the fan to spin faster. Even the cheap laptop cooler will do. But if you want a good one, get one of the CoolerMaster. :cool:

    Stop any program u running that uses alot of cpu.

    Close it for awhile.

    Has the temperature gotten hot since the last week? In hot/humid weather, the computer(desktop and laptop) fan will be LOUD.

    Also, if you leave it on 24/7, that might have worn out the fan bearings.

    And I've discovered that the javascript(advertising) on some web pages, particularly on some forums(and on Yahoo.com) causes the web browser to use 100% CPU. So closing those pages immediately drops the CPU usage.

    When your fan is loud, press ctr+alt+del, and select the "processes" tab to see which application(process) is using 100% CPU. Then you can close that application.

    If the machine is under warranty, why don't you see if you can get the fan replaced?

    Blast the dust out of it with some canned air. This must be done regularly. Shoot it into the fans first, then get it in the exhausts. If you have access panels that give you access to dusty areas, then they are worth doing semi-regularly too. Makes a big difference on an old Toshiba Sattelite we have.

    Sounds like to me that you have a bunch of cheap junk fans.

    I have been using computers for over 30 years, running them 24/7, and never a fan issue. The computer I am typing this on is over 20 years old and the only time it is off is when the power fails. I have other computers over thirty years old which have been on 24/7 most of those 30 years. Never had a disc problem nor any fan problems.

    So, my suggestion is to buy a QUALITY fan, or buy a QUALITY computer.
