I go to install it, but then it brings up "the page cannot be found".

I get as far as typing in the blog name and email. I hit install then get an error.

    WHY?!!?!

    Thanks.

Have you created the database required for WP? I'm guessing you probably have...

Why don't you contact your host? They're probably in a better position to trouble shoot than anyone here is :)

Do you install it manually or through Fantastico?

If you are with hostgator or a similar ISP go into your cpanel and det it up using fantastico.

Also dont worpress.org offer a free installation service anyway?

No, I would recommend not doing it through Fantastico or some other automated method. It's pretty much impossible to get an error if you do it manually and follow the simple instructions.

Download the newest version from wordpress.org, upload them to your server, create a DB and user and away you go...

I am in accord with (almost) everyone here. :-D

The reason why Fantastico is such a great tool is that it it makes the installation process a snap! It will not only install your Wordpress blog, but it will create the MySQL databases necessary for it to run. This is more than necessary for newbies who don't have a clue about things like building a MySQL database. Yeah, the instructions are easy... if you know what the heck they're talking about. Most newbie's don't. That's a lesson for another day. The important thing is to get your blog up and running, first.

If your web host does not have Fantastico installed into everyone's cPanel, either twist their arm to get it or find another web host... :)

    Best wishes!

In the cpanel, try to chmod all files to 777 . It is very important !
