Depends on how much profit you might make on a certain product.

The conversion rate determines your bid.

Suppose if the conversion rate is 1% and the commission you get is $30, then the maximum you can bid is $0.30

That will make you break even, but if you bid anything anything less than $0.30 - that's profit.

but if you pay too little for competitive keywords, your ads will never show up.

Buddy, i would suggest that you get one of the many adwords books around first.

Like the others said it depends on the product price, however its more than just that.

    - When you first start a campaign set the bids for all your keyword to something decent (Example 0.40 - 0.80 depending on competition) that will make your advert to grap some of the top positions.

    - At this point test each keyword for like 100 clicks each. After this amount of clicks you will know if a keyword is profitable or not.

    - If a keyword land 0 sales delete. If it land some adjust bid amount....etc etc...

I hope you have some more insight how it works now....Good Luck!

I pay average around 10c to 15c for adwords clicks and I have decent size traffic...however I have other keywords where my bid is higher because I want to ramp up the traffic.

I agree. If u lose $$$ in Adwords and don't make any sales then u wud lose HOPE and wud quit IM :D

Instead write articles...make a few sales & then jump into Adwords :)
