How do you Promote a General Forum? I made one at OpinionRiot and I have no idea where to start.

Sorry man, I didn't really feel like searching I kind of just wanted a question answered with as little effort as possible. It was nice of you to respond and bump my thread, even though your response provided no help at all regarding my inquiry.

If 20 people like you asking the same qusation over and over again do you think it's okay? That's why we have search feature here...

Because you are lazy to search, here is the answer... read below in quote first..

You're going to make people mad... Better refer to the searches before you post something that's already been answered in many threads.

    What are you talking about?

You are already promoting by having your link here. I think that you should post more often.

"Sorry man, I didn't really feel like searching I kind of just wanted a question answered with as little effort as possible." Give up quickly if this is your attitude towards it. A forum is extremely difficult to successfully start and requires an unimaginable amount of work by its founder and early members to grow and become successful.

There is no simple answer for your forum you need quality members who post regurarly and make quality posts. You need solid traffic to read these post and hopefully convert to traffic. You need a fair bit of content to get people interested in the forum to begin with.

Really take time to consider if a forum is right for you because it can suck the life out of any webmaster and requires so, so much work. :)

However I wish you the best of luck.

i too having a general forum, it is difficult to promote, because it is not concentrating in single niche. but getting some good backlinks will really promote your forum

Yeah, I'm about to begin building back links. However, I think I will also post Youtube videos and other interesting content in the forum and then submit the pages through Social Bookmarking sites.

That's a very good idea. You need to have something on your site to keep viewers and members occupied.

I hate to break it to you guys, but the last thing the net needs is another "general" forum.. come on kids... boil it down to a niche - you retards will have zero success with anything general, whether it be forum, directory, or anything else of the like...

Unless you're a ninja like myself, I suggest picking a niche and taking it from there.

I'm very new to this as well. I own a small home improvement company and have decided to build a forum related to that since I have quite abit of knowledge. I personally post on about 10 different boards so the concept is not new to me. I actually built my company webpage and added the forum as a link. The forum has its own domain. This is good information, as I too aw looking for ways to promote it. Thanks for some good ideas. And I also did a search as well!!:D

You need a forum to have a meaning! There are far too many general forums around. What has yours got that the others haven't?
Make a forum based around a unique niche.

I don't mind people asking the same questions... we're in a marketing forum. Generally, the questions don't differ all that much anyway.

To be quite honest, I think you may find it extremely difficult to get targetted traffic to your forum and begin posting. You call it a "General Forum" and this is probably a big mistake. I would recommend targeting a more specific group. Whether it is Politics, religion, or whatever doesn't matter as much as it being something you are passionate about discussing.

Second, I would recommend investing some of your marketing funds into paid posting. Fillmyforum.com is a good option and quite inexpensive. The reason for this is because even if you have targetted traffic, you have to have content there, and an appearance of having an active forum. If it doesn't look active, people won't be compelled to register, and probably even less compelled to post anything.
