Should Internet Marketers Be More Like Britney Spears?

I am asking you this question, because Britney Spears got some qualities that makes her rank "No. 1 for the year in USA TODAY's Celebrity Heat Index, which measures exposure in print and online entertainment news outlets. Spears, who was No. 1 in 2007, took the top spot 11 weeks this year, the most of any celebrity." She is then No. 1 two years in a row, and according to Yahoo!, she is the most searched person in 2008.

No matter what you might think of her, she is doing something right.

So, am thinking, what can we learn from Britney Spears?

    It's about Passion

She was very young when her singing career started, actually, she was eight years old when she first auditioned to be a Mouseketeer on Disney Channel's Mickey Mouse Club Show, well, she didn't get the part just then, because she was too young for the show, but you get my point. She loved singing, and that's what she wanted to do, and that's what she ended up doing.

As an Internet marketer you will need to be really interested, you will need passion in order to be successful. It's about focus. The more you work at it, if you think about Internet marketing both day and night, and then acts on it, you will be successful.

    It's about Self-confidence

It's obvious that she has a lot of self-confidence. The way she moves on stage, the way she takes the breath out of her audience. When you see TV-interviews, you never see a shy woman that lacks answers. She is professional.

You need to have authority as an Internet marketer, you have to believe in yourself and understand what it's all about. When you write, when you talk (even if it's on twitter), your friends, your visitors need to see a self-confident person. A person they will all like to hear more about.

    It's about being Creative

In order to stay at the top as one of the most popular artists/celebrities in the world, she is doing unexpected things. Unexpected things both when it comes to her career as an artist and in "private" (I am not so sure if the private stuff should be labeled as creative though, even though it is).

As an Internet marketer you need to stand out from the crowd. If you are doing what everybody else are doing, being a copy-cat, too few people will know your name, and very few people will buy what you are selling. Be different, be a purple cow.

    It's about being Sexy

She is hot, and it's hard to argue that she would have become as popular as she is today if she wasn't sexy (but of course, it's mostly because of her quality as an artist). A great performer, is a great performer, but sexy sells.

As an Internet marketer, you need to be sexy with words, with graphics, with audio and with video. You need to be sexy at whatever you are doing. The more sexy you are, the more people will be attracted to you.

It's about Working with the Best

She has the best staff that money can buy. For instance, Max Martin, a famous Swedish producer, wrote ...Baby one more time and R&B guru Chris Brown is the latest one writing songs for her.

It's close to impossible to have success as an Internet marketer if you are completely alone. Find people, get to know people that you can trust, people that have success, people that are professional. Make them help you, help them. Understand that all the gurus working with Britney Spears wouldn't (probably) be working with her if she wasn't Britney Spears. If you help your people make money, they will stick with you (forever).

It's not about Quantity, but Quality

It's not about quantity, but quality. When she is performing, she (and her staff of course) is picking the right spots. She is doing the right interviews, and she is releasing the right albums (well, at least according to her fans). She is not rushing anything. Sometimes more means less.

When you are writing a blog post, never rush it. When you are launching a new product, think about the words you use. Be sure that your graphics are excellent, make everything close to perfect before you release anything. Being popular is about content, quality content.

    It's about being Persistent

Even though she have had a really hard time the past year, she is now back at the top.

No matter how tough it's going to be to achieve success as an Internet marketer, if you have the passion, be persistent and you will be successful. It might take monhts, or it might take years. Hang in there.

    She is her Business

Everything she is investing in, she is investing it in herself. She is her business; her mind, her voice, her body, her looks, her dancing, her reputation (everything) is her business (like it or not).

As an Internet marketer, you are your business as well. Invest in yourself, don't just invest in your website or your blog. People trust you, and if they trust you, that's when they buy. If you forget backups, if everything is lost, you will still be you, you will still have all the knowledge, all your contacts, and you can still make it back to the top.

What do you think, should we be more like Britney Spears? :)

Personally I think the breast implants would be kinda painful. :) So not for me.

And seriously, man, have you ever seen her in an interview? Talk about REALLY painful. She's been carefully schooled so that she can just barely sound coherent. It's pretty sad, actually. I saw her on Oprah a few years ago and Oprah was prepared to give her this royal treatment and was just glowing over her. She asked her some basic questions like "What was the significance of that huge green snake you came out with in your show? Did you come up with that idea? What was the theme, etc.?"

And the girl just blinked and hummed and haahed and said, "Um, er, it was, like, a snake, you know?"

Nobody should be emulating Britney Spears. They should examine what the parents, particularly the mom, did to turn both of their underage daughters into whores.

And pretty much NOT do that. Other than maybe extrapolating some marketing concepts.

I'm not going to be dancing with a snake, though. So those methods, alas, are not for me.

The thread starter is talking about a great analogy, but I think the others are talking about human anatomy.

Oh man.. being a musician myself, I can't stand Britney.. at all.. but you've got some good points here. She's not all that bright, but I'm sure she's got plenty of people who can think for her, and often do. So perhaps not emulate Britney, but instead, the people who contributed to her success. But it's still about making a splash and 'working it' while you're in the spotlight.

Brittany Spears is nothing but a marketing vehicle for the record companies. Her music sucks...if you can call it music. If you can't see that, then I feel sorry for you.

My point is that it doesn't matter whether you like Britney Spears or not, the fact is that she is one of the most popular people on the planet for the second year in a row.

We can debate why that is, in fact I don't like her music, but it fascinates me that she is so popular.

What I tried to do, is start a discussion about whether or not Internet marketers could learn something from her (or her team)?

It seems that people either hate or love her, maybe that's the reason why she has become so popular, and maybe that's why some Internet marketers become popular as well? They have to evoke some feelings among their "visitors" / followers in order to become popular?

I don't like much about Britany, but feel more sorry for her than anything else.

Spears is an example of a well handled product. Left to her own devices, she probably would have been popular in a small town, working at WalMart and popping out babies. But with good handling, she's become a multi-million dollar industry for herself and others. So, (like others have posted) the trick is to study how she is managed so well that even with all her draw backs, she continues to make money.

No, I don't think we should emulate Britney. She is an act, totally fake, and totally untrue to who she is as a person. Her marketing tactics are cheap and shallow. I see no real "quality" in any of it. Is it the best trash in the business, yes. But that is not quality.

No, I don't wish to learn anything from her. I do believe in building a quality website and doing quality marketing of it. I don't see her as quality at all.

We all know it was not intended to be a literal example. But some seem to feel that just because it is a great deal of attention, we should emulate it. I say, "no". There's good attention and bad attention, positive and negative.

It is one thing to create buzz, and another to do it by selling sex to little girls. That's what she's doing. I say that creating buzz should not be the goal, creating good positive quality buzz should be.

I think other comments are irrelevant. The thread starter is not talking about Britney Spears. He is using her as a good example of Internet marketing strategy, and not as bad sample to our society.
