Geez, people, try to read the whole thread before replyin' whydoncha. I already said I'm keeping the domain, like, 2 days ago.
For the life of me I can't find the link to the blog article or wherever it was, but I read a really thought provoking piece that set out to put a value on undeveloped ideas vs developed ones... it rings true for me with domain names also: It basically said the best idea in the world was only worth about $1000 undeveloped (it has some funky matrix to calculate this) - I'd say the same goes for a domain. What would you have paid for google.com BEFORE it was the phenomenon it is today...? So unless you have a REALLY good idea on how you're going to make money off that domain name, I'd sell - and even if you do have a really good idea, would it not work on another domain with 'nearly 5 figures' to invest as development?
Heh heh, so I told the guy No, that I would be keeping the domain, but he refuses to take No for an answer. He just upped it to another $2K. Now I REALLY don't want to sell.
I know, it's logical that I should sell it and make the instant 5-figures, but I just can't bring myself to do it! I think this thing has great potential come Fall...
you could be playing a dangerous game, Jackie. One where your wallet won't get fat. And that's not good. BTW as long as you can live with the decision it's all good.
Exactly what "game" are you talking about, bro? I already told him I'm not selling, but he continues to make the offer. How does that qualify as a "game" in your book?
A game as in, you'd denied instant 5 figure ammount and want to play with the domain yourself. that could cause a backfire.
Okay, guys, whatever. Mod, can you please close this thread? There doesn't seem to be any point to it anymore, and it's moving toward a decidedly unhappy place. Thanks.
can you give us a hint on what niche that product belongs to? electronics, pharmacology? don't tell me it's related to blu-ray technology.
Hahahaha! Yeah, spill the beans so everyone and their Jack-Russell terrier knows and tries to get a slice of the pie. Remember those sharks I was telling you about, Jack?
onya jack. keep holdin' those cards! I admire your perserverance even under attack by your fellow members. It is sounding more and more like this guy wants it bad and it also sounds like he has got some money too! You'd have to way up where the balance is between taking a nice sum and feeling confortable with and not taking the sum and making the domain realise it's full potential. DP Members. You could be talking to the next Bill Gates here! Bow and respect you people!
I can understand why you think it has more value to you after the potential buyer keeps upping his offer significantly. It makes you realize that is has much more potential. But weight the potential downfalls. As others mentioned, if it infringes upon a trademark, even one that is yet to be filed, you could possibly loose the domain, or at least the potential to profit off it. Also, you may not make as much money (than the 5 figures) by holding the domain, even if the market hits like you suspect. (though i dont have a clue what market you are talking about) And another thing, you could sell it for a very nice quick profit, then go find another domain and still be a player in that market. With the money you made you could drop a bunch on SEO and regain top spots for those keywords??? Your mind does seem set to keep it, and i hope adding to this thread, you said you wanted closed, does not tick you off. But, seriously, think it through. And think about the time value of money. $10,000 today is worth a hell of a lot more than taking 6 months or more to earn it. But if you think its worth keeping, then I wish you good luck. Looks like you already got the horseshoe up your ass on this one
if you have a site that is self sufficient without having to really work on it to make money, I normally advise to keep it. If it has a ton of potential for someone who has the time, skill, drive to work on it ... find the right buyer.
