Some say yay, some say nay...what's the truth about link exchanges?

    Hi pleasant peoples of DP

Ok...so in my relentless research on SEO, I have noticed that a lot of people say that if you use link exchanges Google will penalize you in the SERPs...perhaps even ban your site.

However...others say that this is a myth and it doesn't matter if link directories/exchanges link to you...any backlink is a good link.

So, what's the truth of the matter? I would like to hear your opinions please.

    thanks
    j

i dont care about seo ifs and buts about link exchanges, because if your doing link exchanges for the right reason (possible extra traffic from a related website) and you gain extra visitors from it who cares about if its good for seo or not???

    Exactly,

I get an enormous amount of traffic from links pages and resources pages from thousands of other sites. It's possible you may be sandboxed at first but when Google take you out of the sandbox your site gets a huge boost in traffic.

My policy is get as many as you can. However, even more so get as many site relevant as you can.

Get related links, and it will be useful...

Another important factor is the anchor text found on the link.

    thanks folks

ummm...I'm pretty wet behind the ears. can you explain the concept of being "sandboxed" please?

ewan, should my link anchor text be the same for all my link submissions, or should it be somewhat varied?

I didn't find that to be true in my case. I built a web site and just did nothing but create a large amount of backlinks to it (with only one anchor text). Within 2 months the whole site (every page) went to PR4 and was receiving good traffic.

If that site was sandboxed I would not have received hardly any traffic.

i'll tell you the key to linking, its really easy.

request about 43,000 link exchanges, and you will automatically drive people to your site, even if only a percentage of them. You will see massive jumps in alexa rank as the 43,000 eventually go throughout the email of the admins.

Then place all related links and actually all links until your alexa is about 500,000-900,000 and then only actually accept links from others below 1,000,000 alexa rank. You instantly drive traffic and boost your clickthrough ration, even if you won't get sales from it, you will increase your click through drastically.

and a few weeks after you have gotten thousands of links onto your site, you will see that in a raw google search of your site, you find millions of links and placements, as well as getting your page rank to 5 or better in a matter of 4 weeks.

I use linkmarket.net, i don't anymore its not worth the time now, but in the beginning when I was doing 18 hour days, i'd sit on linkmarket during the middle of the night and weekends and request thousands of links. Those times are ideal for bulk requesting because there are not many people on the servers then and there is very little delay. You can do more than 10,000 link request in one good night, Keep it at here people.

Usually what I do for client sites is to vary Anchor text, as it would make it look more natural. Because people normally write differently. But if you dont have the time, using the same anchor is ok...

However the main disadvantage of doing so, is you miss out on the chance to rank on other related keywords. Which could be achieved by varying your Anchor text.

The theory behind it is the text found on the anchor text, passes on to the following page. This theory is backed up by the "Miserable Failure" bombing trick.

For more information, type miserable failure in Google. And you'll know wat i mean.
