Does excess of SEO leads to a google slap as well?

I have a site, which had been coming on the first page results for quite some time, for the keyword for which it was optimized. Now, it is nowhere to be soon. I have optimized it really well. Maybe, i have overdone it. Please tell me, if this leads to a google slap?

Yep! over-optimization can result in loss of rankings and hence, traffic.

How old is the site ? You may have entered the "sandbox" keep building links and you will return within 6 months.

Well it's not over-optimization via your site (unless you did something blackhat), it probably has to do with backlinks. If you build up too quickly you can get a penalty - this happened with a few of my sites, in the worst case I've still yet to get back on the SERPS for a particular keyword (I do rank for others, but for the one I most optimized I'm not on there at all from being #1 - to nowhere). With other sites I've had more luck - just don't build links and tone down the seo optimization a bit - let it cool down and you'll be back in business, most likely 2nd page at which point just let the links build organically.

over-optimization can indeed get your site dumped into the netherlands of page 500+. This change happened back in about 2003. Before that, you could keep on upping the keyword density till your page was gibberish, and then you'd rank. Not any more!

Now you need unique content, and backlinks.

It is probably not the optimization overdone .
Studying the SERP and the sites that are just below you .
You might find out why they are coming up and you ranking are dropping . Good luck !

Over optimization might hurt you, however it's based on the targeted niche and the competition of the targeted market / keywords.

You can get "slapped" for doing bad things like stuffing keywords in the title tags, in the alt tags, and also within the content. Just make sure your content makes sense when you read it back and you will be just fine.

I didn't use any blackhat method to generate backlinks. I used to write on article each day and bookmark each one to about 30 bookmarking sites. I guess it is over optimization. I hope it comes back to the search results soon.

I think it depends on what you do to promote more so thon how much some things just aren't worth doing if your looking for longevity

You can certainly get banned or dropped in rankings for over optimisation and buying/selling links. Have you done any of this with your website?

I guess over optimized means stuffing the keywords in your content unnecessarily!

I believe if offsite seo efforts outweigh onsite content and regularity of content updated that it may have a negative effect.

Its purely opinion, but i believe it could work like that.

I was obsessed with link building, now i appreciate the importance of actually having something worthwhile for the visitor when they do find a website.

The sad truth is if you don't do any your site will never go anywhere...
If you do some you will end up on page 10 of the SERPS...
If you over do it, you will be on top for a very short time and then slapped with a large wet noodle...

You simply cannot win unless your site is so popular that you could not care and forget about SE's.
For the normal webmaster its a constant struggle of trying to get ranked well and walking on glass trying not to piss anyone off...
