Here is a theory of mine:

First of all I have to say that since the beginning of Google in 1998 I have never seen a drop in PR as long as I have owned the site...and i have built and owned hundreds of websites.

    My trick is this...think "Organic"

For each of my sites, I seek out one organic backlink once every 3 days or so.

Sometimes I might find a link exchange partner and find several links on the same day. Then I will shift my efforts to other sites for that week, or so depending on how many links I acquired.

I believe Google is looking for regular link building efforts, without the use of software or submission services.

What I see with a lot of sites...is when a new site is launched, the webmaster will build lots of good backlinks. But as they gain PR they stagnate on their efforts. So if you piss about for three months between one update and the next, you will might see a drop in PR. If no efforts, have been made at all you may get wiped off the map.

High PR does not mean you will have a good search engine position. SEO and constant organic link building are what determine your rise in the search engines. Also do not forget competition.

Secondly - When you see a drop in PR do not rush in and try to fix everything on your site. If you did proper SEO from the beginning, be patient and it should come back.

Just my two sense. Its worked for me, so I am not going to change my methods since I already know they work.

Google Toolbar works fine. You have to enable "Check PageRank"

One of the other factors not really touched on here is that of on-page regulation. When I changed my site, it went from a PR6 to a PR2 due to the complete rewrite (and subsequent footprint) change. Sometimes the algorithm will identify you as being too spammy, optimized, or having too much change (which indicates site ownership transfers).

This is true. There are several sites that I have owned that I would like to change the template, or look for...however, even by changing the layout your are taking the risk of losing PR. So you have to ask yourself ...is it worth it.

If you have a high PR, but not a very good position in the SE's I would most likely do it anyways and build it back up.

You could only see the change in indexed page every month but pr is updated after every three months. As far as my experience is concerned, i totally disagree with you.

One of my sites got PR3
    Another got PR2
    and another got PR1

What i dont get is, the one that got PR2 is still in development and gets like 1 hit a day while the PR1 gets 100-1500 hits/day (but i know thers many url shrinking sites already and the Pr2 one is unique)

One site went from PR 1 to PR 0 - this has been a very confusing time for that site. It had been a Page Rank 4/5 for about 5 years and then dropped to zero, then for a week it went back to 1 now its zero again. Google is really screwing with that site.

    The others
    PR 3 went to a PR 4
    PR 2 went to a PR 3
    PR 4 stayed a PR 4

well thats alright I suppose but I so confused with the first site, I had focussed all my efforts on this site and saw a drop, the others I updated regularly and they increased. Maybe google is not recognising my incoming links.

These last two months i have carefully been building quality links to my site and was expecting good things in the latest update, but i have dropped from a PR3 to a PR2.
Can anyone see any obvious reason why?
    The site is: www.namecake.com

    Thanks

Perhaps you built nice related links, but they weren't of a high enough PR to sustain your PR3. Also remember that your backlink providers themselves may have dropped PR which means you drop along with it.

Ok. I see that PR update has happened but is it complete?

Most of my sites have no PR info as yet?

A few got PR though and it all increased.

    What is going on?
