Using a self-hosted blog for SEO?

    Hey all

I'm looking for some tips for using a self hosted blog, and how to use it for full effect for SEO on my main website?

    For example:
    Main website: h$$p://www.examplesite.com
    Blog extensiion: h$$p://www.examplesite.com/blog

What could I do with the blog to help with SEO for both the blog and the main website? Would Google like it for updating regularly, and will that benefit the main website too?

    Thanks

well yea. but i mean you should have the blog on whatever you want your landing page to be. most often the homepage. and you dont necessarily need a blog script, just nicely updated content on a regular basis. new content is king!

Ya thanks for that marcus118. Your own personal blog wont do well until you get those links to your blog "from those higher pr sites"

I would get your site content up (maybe you have) then write your articles and submit a few everyday or more to a few of the top article directories. The back links on your articles would be to the blog since its on your site it will help your site too.

At the same time I would compile a list of several similar sites and start trying to exchang links (free). I would also compile a list of forums that had high pr that were similar and get one way links to your site and your blog both that way.

You should be able to get 500 plus links back within a week or so if your active with just a couple hours a day. Besides you want back links to different areas of your site because each page or blog will rank higher for a different set of keywords in turn the links back should try to stay relevant to the page its linking too.

Your blog will bring in traffic for the entire website....

It will increase the amount of keywords that your site ranks for....

Each blog post should be targeting a specific keyword and make sure to set it up as a landing page so that your visitors know what you want them to do once they find it!

It would help, but if you're trying to keep them as two seperate entities, then I would suggest you put the blog on a different domain name.

How do a set a 'sticky' post on Wordpress? So that one post is at the top all of the time? :)

Yes, the more content you have indexed with links pointing to it on the blog, the more domain authority you will have over time. It's also a great way to get links, passing more linkjuice around your site and to other pages (if your internal linking is any good). Use your posts to link to other pages on your site outside the blog- this will also help boost these pages.

I agree wp is an awesome tool. But if your ever considering adding anything I'd go with drupal. Or maybe joomla.
I've never used joomla but believe its pretty close to drupal.

I know wordpress. Has some pretty good add ons but drupal can do pretty much anything. And its become pretty easy to use.
