Some of you who know me, know that I have been in the music business in my town for some time. Promoting/producing concerts and working with national and independent artists. I have been sitting on distribution since 2005 and have been looking for someone who would be serious enough to put out. I think I found her! She is Puerto Rican and Cuban and originally from Miami, now living in Tampa Bay. Tell me what you think of her voice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qdv8vnuQNx0
I'm not sure I like it. Obviously she is better than what most could produce but not sure she would stand out enough to make any serious money. Good luck though.
what do you mean by produce? she didn't write that song...it is in fact a #1 hit song sung by a #1 hit singer she is singing acapella not sure what you mean and as far as "Standing out enough" to make serious money in what way? and by what means? and what do you base that on...specifically
Yes I do know the song wasn't created by her, I mean she has a better voice than most. But she doesn't really have enough about her to become anything serious, her voice also in parts of the song just doesn't sound that great. Maybe the song isn't for her, who knows. I'm no musical expert, just you asked for opinions and if I heard that on the radio I wouldn't be amazingly impressed. I'm just giving my two bobs worth.
well i want peoples opionions, but i want more than just "i like it or I don't like it" can you show me an example of who you are comparing her to of someone who "has enough to become something serious" You said parts didnt sound good which part? why? was she flat? off key? as far as radio...well this is her singing live, not in a studio after effects, equalization and compression, so she definitely shouldn't be compared to radio. This is good stuff especially since it will stay here and when her music is released...I will be posting results here
I think it's possible for you to help her work her way up, but she needs to be willing to help you. It's not all about YouTube and videos. I'm a music student myself (audio engineer too) and you need to book her into some local clubs/bars and have her sing there, private gigs at people's houses won't really help. There was this girl who's father was really famous in the 60's and she was trying to get her music out there and kept saying how she thought it was really good and would get her far, and it completely flopped. She was signed to one of the big labels too, and they gave her all the money for promotion, but she was more worried about looking good in her videos and pictures and not focusing on actually going out there and singing. Also, I worked with promoting Natasha Bedingfield when she first came out, this was back in 2004. I did a lot of the promotional ads that people hung outside when her new singles came out. However, what happened to her in the UK, following the release of her last album, was the fact that her new record label highly depended on her previous success to kick in and that the album and single would be number one. It basically flopped and they quickly grabbed her in America and now she's one of the biggest things, and now you have DJs using her to get audiences.
you hit the nail on the head, and thats only about 1/10th of what we will actually be doing with her (i have 18 years experience artist development and worked with many indies and majors - in addition to my mother actually being big during motown era as both artist and developer) her 12-month plan is pretty thorough and solid again, this is just to kinda get a feel for how people respond to her. She is currently in the studio doing some original songs and will have some records/ringtones out for sale in a few months I don't expect much from the techie crowd here on DP...naturally this wont become one of the top rated/viewed threads but I'm sure there are a few pop music fans here and all info is good info (taken with a grain of salt of course)
her voice isnt that great. and she doesnt have what it takes to be a "star". basically, she isn't attractive enough. I dont think anyone would want to put her on a billboard.
Well, good luck with it. I have some classmates who just got signed with a label and they think they're going to be the biggest thing next year. I also have another guy in my class who thinks making a demo in a studio will make the labels want to sign them. The fact is that they all look and sound like everything that's out there at the moment. And about the looks thing, well, I think she looks pretty enough. As long as you're able to bring the audience to her, and make them think she sings good, it throws out the whole "look" factor. I see people floating around with pink and purple hair all the time with huge shades, etc, and people just think they're weird!
again....you wanna be specific? what does it take to be a "star"...do you think it's talent...if so how do you explain people who cannot sing at all like britney spears or bobby brown or T-Pain? what are the necessary qualities to be put "on a billboard" (and your experience in that field)
getting signed is easy...its actually step one...there is a lot more to making it in the business than "getting a deal" does their contract guarantee commercial release? or x amount of promotional dollars? most labels don't care about demos....its hard to break an artist (say no sales to 10k record sales)..but to take someone from 10k-100k or 100k -1MM is a lot easier and a smarter investment for labels...they are not looking for talent. as far as looks...most people have no idea how many makeup artists/clothing stylists and THEN photoshop goes on in what they see. which is why you see artists in public with big shades and hats on...they don't look like their promotional pictures...but I don't expect most to know that. Or to be able to see talent in the raw and know what can be done with professionals around them thats why it will be interesting to post results to this thread later. It's actually to prove a point to many aspiring artists about how people will treat you UNTIL you are famous. Prince was booed off of the apollo at his first appearance and he is a musical genius (yes, genius, he plays EVERY instrument, writes lyrics, arranges and composes songs...anyone else who can do that can dispute he is not a genius..until then...as the rappers say "you are just a hater"..lol) I have seen supermodels with no makeup and heard famous singers with no studio effects....its not what you see on MTV....trust that!
She has a good voice.. but as you know the real test is to get her in a recording studio and see how she handles over music.
I know that, I'm a photographer, I know how to make people look better in Photoshop. And yes, I know that good demos mean nothing these days, but you're making it sound like she's an investment. Treat her as a person, don't treat her as your 1,000,000 friend on Myspace. Oh, and believe me when I say this, engineers would rather have talent. I feel sorry for the people working with Britney Spears and people like Paris Hilton. If your talent can't sing in tune, it means more work for them. They're only putting in the extra work because you're threatening them with more money.
She's got some talent I'll give you that. However, she needs a vocal coach. There are times she runs off key and that pitch she did in the middle of the clip is dreadful. It's all fixable, she simply needs a vocal coach. No offense to her if she's reading this, I'm a 300lb fat man personally. However, if she's going to be competing with Britney Spears she needs to drop a few lbs and tone her body up. I honestly think you may have something here... I wish you luck. I actually live about an hour away, so PM me one of her show's I'd like to come see it.
Hi, I am a drummer, been playing for 15++ years (yeah, am that old). I think she has a great voice, controlled herself rather well. Of course, if you compared her to Brit Sparse, Reé seems far better in vocal quality. However, when it comes to singing acapella, she may not be as strong as Whitney or other black R&B soul singers. Nevertheless, they never became polished until exposure and more training. Perhaps you could have her singing to a music? Then the opinion of the fans would be better rated. I would say she's ready. She's got the talent, that's all it takes - not beauty or sexy. But your marketing engine must be in full swing if you are going to market her widely. Getting onto popular platforms or sponsored events would help, I guess. You are the pro in this, so you know better. God bless, Josh
don't read things between lines that are not there. My wife and I are actually her mentors...soooo...your comment is waaaayyy off base she will always be a person first, and we just so happen to be investing into a PERSON...
She is going to be a gospel singer..so britney is not her competition she is currently in vocal training and total artist development you can see her in saint petersburg New Years Eve if you are interested.
thx josh for the comments we only have her recorded on PREPRODUCTION stuff in my studio...and judging by the comments here so far I wont dare post anything not fully mixed and mastered lest they say it sounds "karaoke" out of ignorance of the recording process once we lay some stuff down that is mixed (maybe not mastered but def mixed) then I will post her with some music. her originals are hot
