What's the best way that you have found to get lots of targeted traffic? I was thinking of placing a banner ad on the Yahoo homepage. I already know about adwords, tired of there antics.

placing a banner on the yahoo homepage will certainly get you a lot of traffic, but there are thousand of other things you could do to get more traffic.
    directory submission
    social bookmarking
    Link exchange
    Blogging
Forum posting with the right signature
    Emailing (newsletter)
Videos. Add your link to videos and upload them to video sites
    Article writing.
    Fresh content
One of the best one I ve found is Instant messenger. Add a description of your website to your username and add as many friends as you may think of. When you log in to your Instant messenger they will all be notified, and your message will show.
    Good luck :)

Thanks for the tips, I am pretty experienced when it comes to SEO, but I am wanting to get a large volume of traffic for my New Years niche. I already do most of the things you have stated. :)

That's some heavy advertising you want to do, tarpon19. Good for you. That's the only way to get a lot of consistent, quality traffic. None of this 10 or so hits a day crap you get from signatures, along with a high bounce rate, and other such noob methods.

But, you may want to consider having both your ad(s) and your site critiqued before spending the money.

Ask message board posters, family, friends, coworkers....

Well, if you put a banner on Yahoo you'd probably get traffic, but probably not very targeted at all ...

Once you're past the SEO/PPC stage, the next step is media buys. That's when you're spending $10,000+ at once to get the big traffic. You can test small, but once you get going you could easily spend over $30,000 a day with large media buying sites. Assuming you have a positive ROI, you can very quickly ramp up your site traffic by doing good media buys.

Once you're past the media buy stage, where you're buying tons of media with a positive ROI and want even more traffic, then you might want to look into joining CPA networks.

That's kind of the progression, as I understand it, for going from small traffic to big traffic.

Yahoo smart ads allow you to get the targeted traffic you are referring to ;) Has anyone purchased a banner on Yahoo? If so what was the outcome?

I think it's best, with PPC ads, to send the traffic to your landing page that pre-sells what you're trying to sell vs. direct-linking directly to a merchant's page.

Think of it from the customer's point of view. They're pretty sensitive to scams, even if your program is legit. They click on your link by your teaser statement and go "Whoa! Sales page."

Some will stick with it and read it from the top to the bottom; others will go, "Oh, another ad. It's probably a scam."

So it would better to soften the blow by pre-selling.

Don't underestimate the power of words and how you could show the customer how your offer benefits them. Paint the picture of how they could see themselves benefitting from what you have to offer then support it by the features of the other.

Get deep into their emotions and actually pointing out what they're really wanting. Show how you offer realistically (not hypey) helps them with that.

You could do that with just article marketing which costs you nothing and then DIGGing your articles. The right words go a long way when you pre-sell correctly.

if you do choose to go the PPC route, then it's best to send it to a review page or landing page of yours. That will give the customer the chance to be pre-sold and click to the order page.

If you want some serious traffic then I advise you to go for Adwords.
