How to know that your site has penalized by google?

    Here is my problem ... I can find my site on Google with keyphrase search that is relevant for my website. This means my site has been indexed. Yet on my Webmaster tools there is no information of this. Site, info commands yields nothing. Why?
    My other concern is that i bought a domain that was over 3 years old. I didn't know that it was previously registered. If the domain had been previously penalized by Google, will it affect me now?

    No if your site has been once again comes in Google that mean its penalization period has been finished.Once your penalized period has been finished your site will come again in Google again. I do not know what is the exact time duration of penalization.Can anayone let me know the time period for which site is been penalized by google.
