For the first few days, you will think vista is the biggest peice of cr8p OS, especially x64. However, it grows on you. Plus so many peices of hardware that are out/coming out are only supported with vista drivers. May as well embrace it.

I have been most satisfied with XP and never needed to change to Vista...

Why change from a stable long standing product?

    Regards,

Xp don't know why you would want vista...

but you should go with Linux or Mac OSX
since they blow Microsoft away by light years

Unless of course you either want to do something other than a server (linux) or actually want to do something resembling work (OSX)...

I use all three, but am a firm believer in the right tool for the right job. *nix for servers, windows for workstations, OSX for light duty like browsing where multitasking (or more specifically the piss poor controls for handling multiple programs at once) is at a minimum.

Open source desktop applications are still for the most part tinkertoys, multiple monitor configuration and support is more mature on windows than any other OS, and let's face it OSX handles multiple program instances in a very 'special' fashion. (in the same way some olympics are special)

I would have voted for vista for its DX 10 capabilities, but seeing as there is now DX 10 on XP i'd have to say XP all the way

I agree with you Bad Sphinx. Initially i did think Vista was the worst OS ever but now that I know my way around those 'different than XP' components and more hardware and software is compatible I'm happy with Vista.

Still use (and love) XP on my old machine but wouldn't bother upgrading it to Vista. Older machine = older OS, newer machine = newer OS. I suppose when windows 7 comes out I'll have to convince the wife to let me have a new computer... LOL

There's no reason to do Vista right now, just hang on to the ease of XP until the next OS comes out.

I'm going to say Vista, Even though the user interface sucks, the speed and basic software included is pretty nice, well as the start bar :p

Vista only uses a lot of memory because it caches the programs you regularly use in your memory, so programs you use start faster since they don't have to be fetched from the hard-drive (for the most part). I'm using Vista x64 and I must say I like it a bit better than XP. It hasn't crashed on me or anything of that sort yet.. my computer has been running 24/7 for the past 3 weeks too. Programs start up way faster (but that just may be because it's basically a new machine)

That said, I would recommend getting at least 3GB of RAM so you can use Vista to its full potential
