Permanent 301 Redirect Question

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by sunseven, Dec 26, 2008.

    I own multiple secondary domain names that I want to redirect to my main domain. However some of the domains that I'm redirecting are already indexed in Google and appear pretty high for certain keywords. I understand that using permanent 301 redirects will pass page rank from those secondary domain names to the main domain, however I'm not sure if Google will continue to index and display all the secondary url's in the SERP's. Anyone who knows the answer to this and can offer suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thank you

    They (the redirected sites) will be deleted sooner or later.

    Any surge in PR will be temporary unless the main domain justifies the increased PR.

    The only advantage to doing the park and redirect is if there are live back-links out there on the web where you can still get traffic from.

    Thank you for your response ColbyT but let me clarify my situation. The secondary domain names are clones of the homepage of my main site, therefore bringing about a duplicate content infraction. So I'm trying to eliminate the duplicate content issue but at the same time not terminate my listings in the SERP's

    yuo can do a 301 redirect and use the following code on your old pages which will tell search engine bots not to index your page. this will help you eliminate dup content issue

    <META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX">

    In your exact same situation about 18 months ago I redirected the .net and biz vesions of the main domain to the com version.

    Over time Google dropped the net and biz versions from the index. I still have listed pages in some of the other SE for the net and biz. I still get trafficc from those and from all the backlinks that were out there because everything now goes to the main site.

    Hope this answered what you asked. If not try again.

    Thanks Sultan and ColbyT for your input but in response to ColbyT's last statement. I understand that redirecting the secondary urls to the main url will funnel all the traffic. But the source of the traffic that my secondary urls are receiving, are due to their rankings for certain keywords.

    So my main concern is that when my secondary urls disappear from the search results for those keywords, traffic will take a dive. So here is my rephrased question. If I rectify the duplicate content issue via redirects, will google then rank my main url for the same keywords that my secondary urls are ranking for currently?

    If it is the exact content as you implied it was I am suprised it is not already ranked. Are you sure everything is exactly the same? If they aren't the same then no it won't.

    No one is ever going to be able to answer what Google will do.

    My opinion is that they will but don't bet the farm on my opinion.
