Stop or quit smoking?

I was wondering what expression is more correct and/or more often used: "stop smoking" or "quit smoking".

depends on which keyword you target, but "quit smoking" has a higher competition...

 

quit smoking is the better term however i imagine it would be hard to ranl for this keyword

 

If you concentrate on stop smoking, you'll definitely come up like anything. All the best!!! Quit smoking can't be achieved easily even in search engines. (LOL)

 

millions of ppl think the same way and end up in high competition for "stop smoking" too..
but yep, good advise...
and, please don't try to optimize for such keywords because your SE ranking would never show up... go for the lower ones then hit the boss

try some other keywords with this one as shown in previous screenshot you can see there are some keywords where you find less competition.

 

What personally i feel is Quit smoking would be more used by people as search query,,, stop smoking would be used for an images where you need to show your message with images, but when you are writing some thing about it, you should use quit smoking...

 

Those are quite equal, you can use quit smoking.

i hear and use quite smoking more often then i say stop smoking and it sounds better

 

I think it's funny how people are trying to give their subjective opinion when Sachin410 has provided actual Google data that "quit smoking" is the term used more often.

quit smoking is the more searched keyword in the U.S.

 

Based on sachin's post, we can see that both are very competitive search terms. I think it's going to be very difficult to make it onto page 1-2 in google for either of those terms and as we all know, if you are result #385 nobody will ever find you.

I would probably come up with a more unusual (long tail) term and shoot for page 1 on that. Or even better come up with a few phrases and target individual pages on your site towards each.

maybe something like:
"help me stop smoking"
or "how do I quit smoking"

use google adwords to find a phrase with ~4000 searches a month instead of 400,000. Even though there many fewer searches for those phrases, I would think you'd have many more people actually find your page.

You either write 1000 articles on 'Quit Smoking' and wait for 10000 people to show up on your site or write 1000 articles on long tail keywords like what Davidaneff has suggested and get 10 visitors for each of those lowly searched keywords. You shall end up with the same traffic.

So, either ways, it adds up to the amount of work that you shall be putting up.

You may have a better chance ranking for "smoking cessation"

 

I think "stop smoking" is more common, but both are appropriate.
