viral marketing is basically marketing that spreads on it's own accord without much input of the business. Like an interesting article or funny video. Like when someone tells you go to google to find out information, google doesn't pay these people to tell others. So, it's a great way of marketing, but really hard to get rolling.
Create a Ebook and hand it out for free, then allow those people to hand your ebook out for free, the ebook will have all your links in it and as people pass it on for free you will be creating viral traffic.
I think the definition varies depending on who you ask. It is content, usually multimedia content that get's picked up by users on social networks and spreads out of control. It's word of mouth marketing but on a much larger scale. For example, http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/ - is one of the more successful viral campaigns. People started talking about it and it spread like crazy. Now whoever did that is a millionaire. There is no easy way to implement viral marketing. It is a mix of creativity, luck, and marketing. Outsourcing of viral marketing can be extremely expensive...
I went to Google and typed in "What is viral marketing?" I got a good site, but this forum wouldn't let me post the link because I'm too new, apparently. Conduct a search on Google like I did, and click on the first result. There were lots of definitions and good info on viral marketing.
Remember that you have to create something that people WANT to pass on to their friends, associates, etc. If you create something that doesn't have that "tell a friend" factor, it won't go viral.
I've done some viral marketing and I have done it repetitively with repetitive success, but the annoying thing is when some asshole sees what you're doing and decides to copy your freaking idea, and some of the overall craze carries over to his website instead of yours. I'm wishing that marketing techniques could be patented, so that I could sue whoever copies what I'm doing.
