Well they finally got the beta out. Even though I really don't use phpBB anymore. I will give a try soon to see the new features.

Yeah I installed it. It seems pretty cool. But it is going to take a while for the mod and theme community to build it up.

The permissions system is very complex. Also, you now have the ability to edit templates directly through the Admin CP.

Looks like they used the most popular mods for phpBB 2 and put them in 1 package along with some other mods already available for phpBB 2 :D

If it's stable, i'd probably use it on one of my sites.

^ I wouldnt suggest doing that. The phpBB team has strongly urged not to use it for a live forum. And its definitely not stable, lots of bugs. I would suggest waiting until the final release.

They did take a few of the popular mods but not the most popular...QUICK REPLY! They refuse to add the most simplest and most widely used mod available. Also their admincp stinks. I am not impressed at all by phpbb3. I been watching the CVS progress. It's crap. You can get mybb or SMF which is 10x better than phpbb3. I don't think the mod community will be too quick to create new mods for phpbb3 and that the software is going to take a back seat (finally) to better software.

RSS is the most common blog/forum element these days, and they should have included it in the new release as well.

That would only make sense which is why it's not included.

phpbb3 beta has features from over 2 years ago...anything that's been introduced within the past 1-2 years isn't in phpbb3. It's got to be the worst new product EVER. Seriously I don't know why they are even bothering. They have goofed so badly with phpbb2 to phpbb3. All the freatures they have poured into phpbb3 you can get a mod for phpbb2 and install it within a couple hours. Why did it take them over 2 years to beta phpbb3?

I am just thoroughly disgusted at one of the biggest open source projects. I think it's headed the way of phpnuke. Back into obscurity and shunned by serious webmasters.

The more I use phpBB alongsite other sites running VB the more I get to hate it. Doing everything seems to take a long time and it always has a 'clunky' feel to it. All I'd use it for now is to start a forum off and then migrate over to VB once it becomes successful.

I used to use phpbb 2.11 / 2.0.11? and switched over to SMF their forums are a lot better than phpbb and its free.

I have just spent the last ten days educating myself on vbulletin as I get ready to do my first site with vbulletin and they go and do this. I have a bunch of phpbb sites.. I don't need this distraction. :)
