If you are asking such questions, I would suggest trying cutting your teeth on a basic reseller program, learn how to manage the customers as well as get some experiences in web hosting.

Next get a VPS, where you can learn the ropes on how to manage a server and so on. Finally get a dedicated server such as Dell server, HP servers are great too. But take it step by step. From your questions I guess it is safer to start from the beginning as a reseller.

Ask yourself why you wish to start a hosting company ?
Nowadays, everyone has a reseller, master reseller, vps, dedi etc. Would you be able to compete with the unlimited for $1 sellers ?

The hosting industry is a really cramped industry, where you need to stand out from the crowd to get customers to your company.

If you are really interested , then follow wisdomtool's advice. It is correct & to the point.

If you're asking this in a public forum, you shouldn't start up.

Get a reseller account from BlogsHoster.com and start reselling packages! ;)

Why them? 'Cause they host all my blogs and have exceptional support!

Your questions are way too vague. I'd suggest starting here: webhostingtalk.com to learn more about hosting, and as someone suggested, consider a start with reseller hosting first. You'll find a lot better web hosting specific information and numerous relevant threads on the subject at webhostingtalk.

My advice would be to save money, at least to cover your servers operating costs, or have some other income to cover it. You wont make good money right away, so being prepared always helps. Also, don't go all out spending money on advertising, it doesn't work at first. People who purchase hosting usually research company history before buying, and if you're new, those wasted ad dollars won't come of any use. Instead get clients to refer others or get reviews, make yourself known in other words.
