Perhaps there are some changes. Lately Google PR has been fussy these past days and I suggest you not to worry about it till it settles down.

I think Google will eventually start to dislike directories as a lot of people sell links, abuse directories.

    quality directories kept their PR.
however, directories that accept all submission without reviewing them gonna get penalized by Google, that what i;ve red from Matt cutts blog.

Most of new directories were created on Old domain names and few were junk . Now only quality maintained directories have page ranks . I have few good list and all of them are well ranked now also .

Glad I saw this thread, its exactly what was on my mind.

I just wrote a series of two posts on my blog about why exactly directories are dead and why/how they're being replaced by bookmarking sites.

Basically, directories aren't relevant to the internet anymore. Search technology made them partially obsolete, but social bookmarking is really what kills them.

Bookmarking sites are just like large directories that allow chat and voting. Google hates manipulated results, and they love democratic voting. Add this in with the way that every blogger will gladly post Digg & Reddit buttons on their post and there's just no way that directories can keep up in the long run.

    I own a pagerank 5 directory.
It has been up and running for 2 years now.
I wont give away the link so it wont be considered that I am advertising it.
    I get arround 2000 UV/day and about 7000 hits/day .
I can say that quality links that are submited get arround 100-200 hits every month from my directory. People submit to it, because its pagerank and inner pr categories.
along the 2 years, it got arround 30 000 links submited and arround 2000 featured, so anyone can conclude that the website sold links. Although, I was never penalised by google, having ALL, and I mean ALL my pages/link indexed, submitting propper sitemaps.
So I can say, clients get what they are looking for, when submiting to me .
Refering to your post, my thought is that 80% of directories are irelevant, and needs to be deleted, but not all .
Ontopic, refering to the first thread, it didnt lost its PR, hoping on the next update on a PR6.

Then again, its only my thoughts ...
Maybe the directory business will be gone soon.
Though, I cant figure the day when people wont submit to dmoz, business dir, yahoo, etc .

    Cheers.

    P.S. Sorry for my english:p
