Site was down for 4 hours, dropped off main page!

So this is what happened. I run a site www.dial1auto.com it is about 2 years old. I am hosting thi on my own private server.

I went to a party and while I was at the party, mysql crashed, lost the root password. As such my site was down for about 4 hours until I got home and was able to immediately get it back up.

In that time the google bot must have visited my site and cached the page... my homepage now says "mysql query error" in the index.

I was ranking #1-3 on most of my competitive terms, and in less than 4 hours my whole site went from about 150 uniques a day to almost zero since the server went down!

This is what google see's of my site as of now http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=dial1auto.com&btnG=Search

Now that the site is back up, should I expect my rankings to return to where they were in a few days or so? Or did the mysql crash just hose all my hard seo work?

lol, thats pretty funny. You have to wait until google reindexes your page to change! i would resubmit my sitemap so it knows it has changed!

i'm pretty sure once it will be indexed, it will be back to normal. to avoid future crashes i recommend having a host with a back up server.

It might not be exactly where you were before, but after a couple weeks, you should be back to where u were before. U should invest is a backup server.

    Hope this helps

Make some updates on your sitemap to Google Webmaster Tool.

it'll get reindexed, just wait, it'll happen :)

That's a bummer. Change the content a little on all your pages. Get some more backlinks, maybe to some new pages... that may get it visiting again. Also try getting a backlink to your domain without the www, and do a permanent redirect to your real homepage - s.e.s love new stuff, and it may be enough to get it interested again.

Likelihood tho is that you may have to wait weeks for it to sort itself out. Whatever you do, don't a. give up or b. assume it will fix itself.

Your site shouldnt drop off the main page for being down for a few hours.

My sites and competing keyword sites have been down numerous times. But I never got knocked off the main page.

I had a very similar thing happen to me a few weeks ago, I moved to a better server but sql crashed after moving the domain name settings over. The site was down for 4 or 5 hours like you and I slipped from the very top of page 2 for my main keyword to the top of page 3. We're still in that position but over the last few days my more competitive keyword made a jump from page 10 to page 3 so I think it's coming back around.

Not sure if this makes a difference or not but Google crawls an average of 1,500 pages per day on my site so maybe this helped me recover faster than someone that only gets a few pages crawled per day?

I wouldn't worry at all :) Looking at google's cache of the site, shows at the 18th dec. it had a MySQL error - the site is up now so it's fine. On the next crawl you'll be back.

    Cache of dial1auto.com
