it's unnecessary to submit your site to search engines though, especially to pay for such a service. Google will find it on its own if you use WMT.

its optional if you would like to submit to search engines, i dont see the point though google will ususally find you on their own, and directory submission is submiting your website link to a directory to build up back links

It's a thing of past (not sure whether it was really required earlie), work on links, content, maintain a sitemap and search engines will automatically find you.

Search engine submission years ago was a way webmasters could get their website into search engine rankings. The idea was to let people (mostly webmasters) notify search engines of a new website.

Over time many webmasters took advantage of submitting sites in order to achieve higher rankings in search engine results. Search engines quickly caught on and now submitting your website has no effect on your rankings.

If you have a brand new website and you are not in Google - do a site command (type site:yourdomain.com in the google search bar) to see if google has any listings for your website.

Like other posts have mentioned before, you do not have to submit to search engines any more, but if it makes you feel better go ahead and submit (only once).

If you focus more on developing a helpful site with good quality content and you start getting quality sites to link to you, search engines will quickly notice you and add you to their index.

Other options include creating an XML sitemap (http://www.sitemaps.org/) and submitting it to each search engine. This can be done through creating an account and uploading your XML sitemap to Google's Webmaster Tools (http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/), Yahoo's Site Explorer (https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/), Live Search Webmaster Center (http://webmaster.live.com/), etc.

    Hi,

Search engine submission is how a webmaster submits a web site directly to a search engine. There are two basic reasons to submit a web site or web page to a search engine. The first being to add an entirely new web site because the site owner would rather not wait and let the search engine discover them at a leisurely pace;) To get a web page or web site updated in the respective search engine is the second reason.

Two basic methods that are still in use today that allow a webmaster submit their site to a search engine are:
    1. They can submit just one web page at a time.
    2. They can submit their entire site at one time with a sitemap.

However, all that a webmaster really needs to do is to submit just the home page of a web site. With just the home page, most search engines are able to crawl a site, I state this assuming that the website is well designed. But by 2004, search engine submission services became obsolete as the major search engines had the ability to automatically discover new webpages by crawling links from other sites.

So from this answer, I guess you would be able to tell if Directory submissions and search engine submissions are the same or not;)

Submitting the URL for any new or not indexed site like "http://www.google.com/addurl/". This is not necessary now bcz if do not submit to any popular SE like Google, yahoo, Live etc will find automatically within few days
